One Soldier’s Successful Journey from the Battlefield to the Boardroom: Part Four
This month marks the conclusion of our series of articles featuring the transition experience and advice of Dave Krall, Regional Sales Manager at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc. If you missed the earlier articles in this series, you can read Part 1 here, Part 2 here, and Part 3 here. This month, we share what Krall deems important considerations as you begin your new civilian career.
Having transitioned out of the Army 20 years ago, Krall understands how daunting beginning a civilian career can seem. He started with Ethicon 18 years ago and helped grow the then start-up to $4 billion in global sales. Krall feels it was the points highlighted below that helped him excel in his civilian career.
1. Be clear on expectations: Krall suggests that you set clear, measurable goals for yourself that are in line with your boss’ expectations. 2. Assimilate to a civilian approach: This includes dropping military jargon and the “sirs” and “ma’ams” (although he acknowledges how difficult this is to do!). 3. Look, learn, and listen: Krall points out that it is best to observe the workings of your new employer, understand them, and gather information. He also suggests that you don’t try to implement change too quickly. 4. Use your transferable skills: Your time in the military has provided you with a plethora of experience that can certainly be applied to your new civilian role in some fashion. 5. Be positive: Go into your new job with a positive attitude, and try to see the best in your co-workers. 6. Move forward: Once you have determined your role within the company and how best to perform it, use the goals you have set and implement plans to achieve them. Be careful not to overanalyze, though. 7. Lead: Your military experience will set you apart from your peers in your ability to lead. Provide direction and guidance, and set goals for yourself and your peers. 8. Have fun: Krall points out that life is too short to do something you don’t love, so have fun while performing your job.
Over the past four months, Krall has provided a wealth of knowledge on every step of the transition process based on his experience. Recall that when Krall started with Ethicon 18 years ago, he had no real compensation plan, products to sell, or customer support. He utilized many of the traits he believes translate into success in the civilian business world, including leadership, creativity, respect, a can-do attitude, work ethic, and honor, every step of the way in his post-military career.
In Krall’s journey at Ethicon, he has been responsible for hiring many employees, an experience which allows him to provide tips for successful interviewing. When interviewing, remember the STAR Technique: S – Situation, T – Task, A – Action, R – Results. Also remember to avoid military acronyms or jargon, be concise in your answers, and relax.

JP Sniffen was my Orion recruiter, and he was simply amazing. He was very patient with me during my recalls back to active duty and the extended time it took for me to get serious about finding a job. JP definitely listened to my goals and needs and was very responsive to them.
My process with Orion was fairly long due to my remaining on Active Duty longer that I originally planned. I started working with Orion in 2007 but remained on Active Duty. I then contacted Orion in 2009 in order to re-start my career search, but ended up getting sent on a deployment to Afghanistan. In 2010, I returned from the deployment and immediately went to a conference in Seattle.
While I was not hired through that conference, I was shortly thereafter placed with Cintas. I am now in an Advanced Management Partner position with Cintas. The biggest parallel between my career in the military and my new position is leading teams and becoming a subject matter expert on new information/technology quickly. My military background as an Acquisitions Officer in the Air Force gave me a well-rounded approach to leadership. I learned how to lead highly specialized teams, from the front, during difficult operations and how to be a Project Manager responsible for developing complex R&D programs. Also, both my military and civilian careers require excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to drive teams toward success, and a willingness to learn new information about your profession.
Orion went over the top for me, and I am definitely appreciative. They were much more concerned about my needs than the competition. Some of the competitors were more apt to take a shotgun approach and hope that one of the jobs stuck. Other competitors were more interested in locking me into their approach to finding a corporate position. Orion was right in the middle, creating realistic job opportunities and providing effective training for landing a job.
National Distinguished Candidate Conference

Orion Recruiter Gives Interview Advice in Military Times Edge article
Bob Berkholz, an Orion recruiter, was recently featured in the article, "Train Like You Interview," in Military Times Edge by Adam Stone. In the article, Bob discusses the value of mock interviews and how to make mock interviews worth the effort. According to Stone, one of the best ways to prepare for an interview is to hold a full dress rehearsal, as interviews are as much about performance as content. By this, Stone means wearing the suit you have chosen, being greeting by a secretary or receptionist, filling out paperwork, and, of course, the actual interview.
Stone turned to Berkholz to give some insight into why this dress rehearsal is important. “[Mock interviews are] an opportunity to learn how to make the interview more of conversation and less of a tennis match,” says Berkholz. By practicing for your interview, you can be better prepared to offer spontaneous answers to unexpected questions and stay focused in a high-pressure environment.
Ultimately, Berkholz gives three tips for staging your mock interview:
• Have a solid opening statement and a ready response to “Tell me about yourself.” • Dress for success. • Use the mock interview to learn how to close and gain commitment for the next step in the hiring process.
