First Lady Urges Businesses to Hire Veterans

During the closing session of the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting on September 23, First Lady Michelle Obama urged businesses and non-profits to hire veterans. The Clinton Global Initiative was established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton with the goal of devising and implementing solutions to various issues facing the world. In the spirit of the Global Initiative, Obama reminded the gathering of leaders that while veterans’ skills are “highly valuable, highly transferable, [and] highly marketable,” more than 150,000 former service members are currently trying to find work.

When discussing the disconnect she sees between veterans and potential civilian employers, Obama said that many employers don’t truly understand the scope of skills a veteran has. In fact, she quoted one survey that found that 61% of employers didn’t fully understand how military skills translated into civilian terms. Additionally, more than three-quarters of veterans say they find translating their military resume into a civilian one to be difficult.

Ultimately, though, the First Lady states that employers should not just hire veterans simply because they are veterans and honorably served our country, but also because having veterans among their workforce makes the company as a whole stronger. “After all, hiring America’s vets and military spouses is not just about helping them,” said Obama, “—it’s about how they can help you. So I’m not asking you to do this out of the goodness of your heart—do it because it’s good for your bottom line and the success of your organization.”

Orion International has believed in the heart of Obama’s message since our founding in 1991. Since then, we have placed more than 22,000 veterans in civilian jobs. In our 19 years in business, we have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge and resources on the transition process that can help bridge the gap Obama references; everything from translating your resume to wowing them at your first interview. We urge veteran job seekers to fully utilize these tools, which can be found on Transition Corner. Orion is here to make your transition a successful one.

Job Seeker Success

“My job search began in April 2010 in preparation for my separation from the Air Force in August. At Orion, I worked with JP Sniffen and Shereen Ali. They were excellent at attending to my questions and understanding my needs. There was a strong focus on ensuring that I not only found a position, but that the position was right for me.
My new position is the Material Control Supervisor for TMX Aerospace. Orion was an excellent aid in my job search. The search was difficult, but the Orion team did a wonderful job at aligning my skills and desires with potential positions. The fact that Orion does not restrict you from utilizing other services shows that they’re different. When you’re looking for a job, flexibility is essential, and Orion understands that fact.
The Orion team did an outstanding job at matching me up with the right employers. Nothing is more frustrating than going into an interview and having someone at the other side of the table who doesn’t understand how military experience could ever apply outside of the government. It’s hard enough to sell yourself, but with Orion, at least you know the employer is already sold on hiring a military member.” – John Day, Material Control Supervisor

“I left the USMC in 1998 and have been in sales for the past 12 years.  In April, I started searching for jobs and attended an Orion hiring conference two months later. Orion came recommended to me by fellow officers. My job offer to be a Territory Accounts/New Business Development Manager for Solar Outdoor Lighting through Orion came in August.

My recruiter was JP Sniffen, and he did a great job of keeping me updated and advising me through the process. My hiring process was extremely professional, the best I have seen.

I would recommend Orion to any military personnel making the transition into the civilian workforce and to any former military individuals, regardless of their length of time since leaving the military.” – Vickie Self, Territory Accounts/New Business Development Manager

“Todd Phillips is a great guy and treated me very well. He promptly returned my emails or calls and fought hard to get me interviews. Todd helped me update my resume, invited me to a job conference in Chicago, trained me with mock interviews, and gave me some pointers, which, in turn, got me a second interview with GE Appliances, where I am now an Advance Manufacturing Engineer. He stuck with me through the entire hiring process. Not only did Todd encourage me and understand what I wanted in a job, but he also cared about what was best for my family, as well.” - Kevin Wagner, Advance Manufacturing Engineer

“My Orion recruiter, JP Sniffen, gave me all of the support I needed. He worked with my needs and restrictions to help me land the job I have now as a Fire Protection Sales Representative with Cintas.  Orion far exceeds the competition.  They are dedicated and work with candidates to meet their specific needs and aspirations while transitioning from a military career to a civilian career.” – Megan Welter, Fire Protection Sales Representative

“I want to thank my Orion recruiter, JP Sniffen, for all the solid advice he gave me during my hiring process. In fact, I’ve already told one of my classmates about all the help that Orion has given me. I told him that out of all the recruiters I worked with, you are the one I would trust. Again, thank you for everything!” – Manny Eleyae, Area Manager

“I'm an active Navy Reservist and went off active duty in 1999.  I began my latest job search this past spring and am now an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer with General Electric. On active duty, I served as an officer in the Engineering Departments on several ships, so it is only fitting that engineering is the field I'm in now.  Additionally in the Reserves, I have served as the Commanding Officer of several reserve units, so I'm used to leading personnel.

Todd Phillips, my Orion recruiter, was extremely professional and approachable and was always available to answer any questions. Orion excels at getting the applicants in contact with the hiring companies.  The best way to explain my Orion experience is that with them there was always something cooking, as opposed to other agencies where I'd always encounter a cold spell or two.

Orion is top notch, and I would recommend them to anybody.  All the employees I encountered were great to work with, and, even during a tough job market, within a few months of contacting them I received an offer for 25% more than I was hoping for.” – Jim Mueller,   Advanced Manufacturing Engineer

“I attended the Orion Fishkill, New York, hiring conference in August and ended up getting a job offer with ConEdison in New York City.   Chris Hurst, my Orion recruiter, is outstanding and kept me informed during the whole interview phase. Having people like Chris working on your behalf is a great benefit to military members like myself seeking employment after being in the military for 20 years. I'm very excited about my new career as an Energy Consultant Project Manager. Great job, Orion!” - Joe Byers, Project Manager

If you like the idea of being in business for yourself, but not by yourself, owning a franchise may be the career for you! Being a business owner allows you freedom and flexibility, while providing a great challenge. Orion is currently hiring for nationwide franchise ownership opportunities. There are 6 different franchises to chose from, all in residential or commercial services. Our client has been ranked among The Best Places to Work in Texas for 2 years in a row, is one of the most respected franchise companies in the U.S., and will provide franchise owners with all training to successfully start-up and run their own business.

As with any franchise opportunity, the franchisee will need a capital investment (at least $25k); and must have the ability to obtain financing for the remainder of the franchise. If you would like to own your business and want to learn more about this opportunity, please email Bob Berkholz, or call him at (800) 336-7466 x 415.
