2011 Veteran Career Resource Recap

The second half of 2011 brought about many new initiatives that are sure to help veterans as they search for a civilian career in 2012. From the new job seeker tools associated with Joining Forces to tax incentives for employers who hire veterans, making the transition to the civilian workforce is being made less complicated than ever before. We wrote about these tools in various newsletters and blogs throughout last year, but wanted to recap them all in one place for you here.

The VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which was signed on November 21, 2011, by President Obama, brings about two new tax credits, as well as makes the Transition Assistance Program mandatory. The two tax credits included in the act are meant to spur additional veteran employment opportunities. And it behooves veterans to know if employers are eligible for one of these credits when hiring them:

Returning Heroes Tax Credit Eligibility:

  • Short-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have received unemployment for at least 4 weeks.

  • Long-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have received unemployment for longer than 6 months.

Wounded Warriors Tax Credit Eligibility:

  • Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: Maintains the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities not more than one year after being discharged from the military, which is up to 40% of the first $12,000 of wages (up to $4,800).

  • Long-Term Unemployed Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: A new credit of 40% of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities veterans with service-connected disabilities who have received unemployment for longer than 6 months.

As part of the Joining Forces initiative, President Obama announced three new programs in effect immediately that are aimed at helping unemployed veterans find civilian careers.

  • Veterans Job Bank: Run by the National Resource Directory, this job bank contains more than 500,000 job openings specially tagged for veterans by employers.

  • My Next Move: This tool allows veterans to match civilian careers with their military experience, as well as view specifics about that career path, including salaries, training, outlook, etc.

  • Veteran Gold Card: Issued by the Department of Labor, the Gold Card can be downloaded and gives veterans access to six months of personalized case management, assessments, and counseling at One-Stop Career Centers located across the country.

Finally, companies like LinkedIn and Google have joined in the effort by offering specialized services for veterans. (And don't forget to join Orion's Military Network on LinkedIn.)

  • LinkedIn will be tagging job postings that could be filled by veterans to enable the postings to appear on the newly-launched Veterans Job Bank listed above.

  • LinkedIn has launched a microsite for veterans with tips, tools, and information on the best ways to find new opportunities across the LinkedIn network.

  • LinkedIn is offering all U.S. veterans a free one-year Job Seeker subscription. All veterans with updated military experience on their profiles should have received an email with more information on how to take advantage of this offer.

  • Google has developed a microsite that compiles free Google products that are useful to veterans and their families.

Transitioning from the military into the civilian workforce takes planning and determination. The tools listed above will help arm any transitioning veteran with the ammunition to take on their civilian job search. Orion is here to help make that transition easier, as well!

Orion Pledges Support to Joining Forces

Orion is proud to announce our participation in Joining Forces, the White House initiative led by President and Mrs. Obama, and Vice President and Dr. Biden.

Joining Forces is a national initiative to involve all sectors of society to provide improved opportunities to Veterans and their families in the areas of Employment, Education, and Wellness. Through this initiative, President Obama has issued a challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 unemployed Veterans and their spouses.

Orion’s commitment to Joining Forces:

  • Orion will expand its Career Assistance Services to reach the Veteran Categories most affected by unemployment, as well as Military Spouses.

  • Orion and Joining Forces will co- host Military Hiring Events at military installations around the country to match transitioning Service Members with companies seeking to hire Military talent.

  • Orion will provide consultative training programs to educate companies on creating and implementing a Military Recruiting Strategy, increasing their ability to hire and retain Veterans.

Orion is proud to have assisted several Joining Forces companies in achieving their Military Hiring goals in 2011, and greatly appreciates the opportunity to directly participate in the initiative moving forward.

Job Seeker Success Story

Trevor Brewster, Integrated Supply Chain Supervisor

University of Central Florida, 2003

I tried getting myself hired on the civilian side for almost two years. After actively working with Orion for less than a month, I received a job offer. "Nuff said." Chris Davis was INSTRUMENTAL in getting me a second look by Honeywell. If not for him reviewing the notes from the interview and calling me to ask me to reconsider relocating, I would surely have missed this opportunity. He took extra steps to get me a second round interview which "sealed the deal" with a job offer being presented only two days later.

Chris was great, and I hope to have my wife work with him in the coming months. He provided quick responses to questions, gave useful feedback for interview preparation, and was always easily reached via phone. In fact every Orion person I encountered at the Dallas conference was very helpful, knowledgeable, and conveyed a feeling that their ultimate goal was to help each one of us get hired.

In my civilian position, I am in charge of 20 technicians who are responsible for the repair and overhaul of airplane flight deck instruments. For the last several years I have been an Infantry Battalion Communications Officer (S-6).  The experience garnered during this time was paramount to being hired with my current civilian employer. I led small teams of up to 20 Soldiers in a fluid environment where each day was different from the next, ensuring priorities were set and tasks were completed on time and to standard. Each of these is directly relatable to what I do for my civilian employer. Without those experiences, I would not have been considered for this position.

Orion exceeded my needs and expectations. I came in expecting it to be like every other job placement service and be handed a list of open positions and asked which I was interested in. Orion did a great job of pre-screening applicants to best match not only the position, but the company, too. My current position truly is a perfect fit. Orion has a system in place that works very well and people who go out of their way to ensure their candidates are prepared for all steps of the job process (resume, interviews, job offer, etc).

According to your Peers

Todd Phillips considered me for positions that I would not have considered myself.  He did a good job of matching my skills with perspective companies and was very proactive in supporting me through all of the leads.” – Tammy Davis, Production Supervisor

“I wish I had known about Orion sooner. If they hadn't contacted me, I don't know where I'd be right now. Christ Hurst and Nora Liles did an excellent job of listening to what I wanted but also suggesting avenues I hadn't considered but were indeed a good fit. Despite my rather narrow focus on location, they didn't pressure me into considering jobs outside my needs.

I worked with two other recruiting firms, as well. Neither of which contacted me as regularly, nor did they seem very optimistic considering my geographic restrictions. Orion not only was the most active in terms of follow-up, but the job opportunities they presented were all potential matches. I really felt like they were working for me.” – Jared Burns, Business Development

“My Orion recruiter, Karin Roberts, was the consummate professional with a great sense of humor and an easy-going attitude.  She was always available to answer all my questions and was very supportive throughout the process.

My job search was a little stressful at first but seeing Orion’s commitment through consistent communication and encouragement with their candidates eased my mind. The professionalism displayed by Orion alone puts them above their competitors, but the fact that their recruiters don’t push you to take any job available is what really sets them apart. I spent a grand total of two weeks out of active duty military service before Orion found the career I had been looking for. Thanks for everything!” - Colin Diggs, Project Engineer

"Two face to face interviews with Acme, and I was HIRED! Chris Hurst was my recruiter, and I was treated very well. I am VERY happy with my new position. My new job challenges me, pays well, pays quarterly bonuses, and I have room for growth based on merit performance.

I'm a Store Director-in-Training. This position is the equivalent of running an extremely large department with multiple divisions onboard ship. Additionally, my experience as a SUPPO, especially in finance and metrics management, greatly helped in understanding P&L statements, not to mention inventory requirements, safety / inspections, and staffing / manning requirements to maximize profit and minimize labor dollars spent.” – Ben Coons, Store Director-in-Training

“I had a very successful experience with Orion. They were able to elevate me past the hundreds of other resumes and were able to get me in front of the hiring manager.” - Alexander Keller, AME Engineer

“Orion was very professional and provided personal attention whereas other firms made an initial phone call but never followed up. Chris Hurst and Nora Liles were very easy to work with.  I would recommend Orion to any of my friends transitioning out of the military.” - Eric Seng, Operations Analyst

“I had a great experience with Orion.  The entire team was very professional, and I was very pleased working with JP Sniffen.  I liked him so much that I quit working with other military recruiters.  He did not pressure me to look at positions I was not interested in.   Also, Orion’s hiring conferences were great and are best way to get hired!” – David Ortiz, Operations Officer

“I started the Orion process about one week before a hiring conference in San Diego.  I was not prepared to separate or start looking for a job, and I was scared to say the least, especially considering my last interview for a job was at a fast food chain 25 years ago.  JP Sniffen and Jim Perdue took me under their wings and showed me how to interview.

I ended up with seven interviews at the hiring conference.  Six of the interviews wanted a second onsite interview.  I did three onsite interviews and received two job offers, and I will be employed while I am still on terminal leave for 3 months! Everyone at Orion listened and helped me every step of the way!” -  Mark Misener, Senior Utilities Engineer

Todd Phillips was my recruiter with Orion. He did a very good job of matching my qualifications with the companies that were present at the Midwest Hiring Conference. I had ten interviews scheduled, and DHI Mortgage wasn’t even on my list. When I went to him and asked if I could have an interview with DHI, he made it happen.

Orion exceeded my expectations. I truthfully was a little skeptical at first but, after the experience at the Midwest Hiring Conference, I am Orion’s biggest promoter.  Orion was definitely a class act, as we couldn’t be happier. I say ‘we’ because my wife was hired through Orion, as well.  Working with Orion was definitely a life-changing event. We cherish the memories we had in the military, but look forward to the next challenge in life. Thank you, Orion!” - Jason Selman, Loan Originator LDP

Karin Roberts should be the first person to consult if you’re a military officer trying to make that critical transition from the military to the corporate world. I was very impressed by her knowledge, professionalism, and work ethic. In one month, she arranged three interviews for me with highly reputable companies for great positions, one of which hired me for a position that I’m very happy with. Orion and Karin really take the leg work out of your career search. I would definitely recommend Karin for any transitioning military officer’s job search.” - Christopher Perrotti, Water Sales Representative

“I had nothing but an absolutely positive experience working with Todd Phillips.  He has been an absolute professional and mentor during the entire transition process.  I actually had originally gained employment outside of Orion when I transitioned in June.  I reconnected with Todd a few months later to see if there were any other options available, as I was looking to go down a different career path.  Once I spoke with Todd, he took the time to address what I was looking to do and where I wanted to be.

Orion was a critical part of my transition to my new career.  Without Orion, I would probably have been lost in a sea of online resumes in a down economy.  Their professionalism, interview preparation, and mentorship is second to none. Working with Orion has been a great experience, and they are #1 in my book in regards to other companies in the industry.

I would, and have, recommended Orion to my friends and peers.  They are patient and professional and have your best interests in mind.  You are not ‘just another number’ to Orion.  They develop your interviewing skills around your strengths and abilities.  I encourage anyone looking to transition from the military to contact Orion International.  If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be where I am today.  Thank you, Todd and the entire Orion International Team!” - Sean Shumaker, Integrated Supply Chain Supervisor

“Orion helped me find a new line of work, and that is no small task in this economy.” - Kenneth Yambing, Store Manager LDP

“I worked with both Jim Freeze and Mike Wood. They were a great team and were both very responsive when I had questions. Working with Orion has been a great experience. They helped me immensely with the interview and resume process, and I felt very prepared going into my first civilian job interview. I know that I acquired a great job with a great company because Orion was there to help me every step of the way.” - Travis Marks, Sales and Marketing Development Program

Chris Hurst and Todd Phillips, my Orion recruiters, were professional, engaged, and well-acquainted with both my background and my goals.  I was extremely impressed with the personalized attention that I received.  It was obvious that they were personally very familiar with my case—it felt like I was working with someone who knew me for years. Their efforts reflected a desire to find the best match for me...not just what would be quickest or easiest for them.

Orion definitely expedited my process of finding a job.  By narrowing my job search to companies that better understood the value of military experience, I was able to make my job search into a process that was working smarter for me instead of just harder.  Orion was also invaluable in educating me about the job search and interview process, something that was completely foreign to me since my only work experience so far had been in the military. Being able to leverage their knowledge and experience made the whole process faster and easier for me.” – Adam Joyce, Major Accounts Manager

“My most recent job search started in September 2011. I tried to look on my own for a month, but my contacts quickly ran out and my efforts were becoming futile. I had no inside track to employers.  I had been trying to get my own business off the ground, and ran out of money after a year.   It had become time to find a job to pay the bills. Orion not only found a fit for the things I wanted out of a job, but a fit for the things I find professionally rewarding and in the geographic area of my desire.

I interacted with a number of people at Orion, including Bob BerkholzDave LehmkuhlMike Harvey, and Chris Casanave.  All were extremely active in helping me sort through options, prepare for interviews, and follow-up with the companies by getting their feedback.  They were personable, attentive, and proactive!  I didn't feel like a cash cow with my desires ignored so that someone could make a buck off me like I had felt with other recruiting firms.

Orion should start a dating service! They took what I wanted, found compatible employers, and placed me in front of them in a very rapid fashion.  I was amazed, because in a down economy I expected things to go slowly. Within two weeks, I was being courted by multiple companies. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” – Christian Ward, Operations Engineer

“Orion was very professional and provided personal attention whereas other firms made an initial phone call but never followed up. Chris Hurst and Nora Liles were very easy to work with.  I would recommend Orion to any of my friends transitioning out of the military.” - Eric Seng, Operations Analyst

“Orion definitely met my career needs. I had to stay in a specific city, but wanted a technical sales position that paid well enough that I wouldn't take a pay cut.  All those needs were met, plus I'm entering a field where I already have experience and I'll be able to work from home, both of which I did not expect to occur.

Karin Roberts did an incredible job responding to my job requirements, even though a Nuke who doesn't want to be a Nuke is somewhat of an outlier!  Every time we spoke, I always felt as if I was her only client at the time, because she knew all my dates and company interests like the back of her hand.  It was clear that her top priority was finding the right place for me at her client companies.  I've already recommended her to a number of my friends.

I now have a position as a Field Technical Sales Representative for a water treatment company. The job relies heavily on my ability to work independently and set my own schedule, with very little guidance, and to build relationships with customers so their needs are handled.  The concept of taking the initiative in my duties is something the military taught me, and relationship-building is one of the key tenants of both military leadership and military staff-work.

I really couldn't have been happier with my Orion experience.  The hiring conference preparation was far better than any emailed guide or phone call from other recruiting firms, and Orion team members were always honest in their feedback with resumes and interviews.  It was exactly what I was looking for.” - Wes Stange, Field Technical Sales Representative

“I would highly recommend Karin Roberts and Orion to anyone thinking about leaving the military and looking for help in their transition. She was very patient, helpful, and willing to go the extra mile to produce results. Karin was able to make use of her many resources at Orion International and find me a quality job in the city I desired. Karin truly is a top notch recruiter.” - Cody Hughes, Power Plant Supervisor
