2011 Veteran Career Resource Recap
The second half of 2011 brought about many new initiatives that are sure to help veterans as they search for a civilian career in 2012. From the new job seeker tools associated with to tax incentives for employers who hire veterans, making the transition to the civilian workforce is being made less complicated than ever before. We wrote about these tools in various newsletters and blogs throughout last year, but wanted to recap them all in one place for you here.
The VOW to Hire Heroes Act, which was signed on November 21, 2011, by President Obama, brings about two new tax credits, as well as makes the Transition Assistance Program mandatory. The two tax credits included in the act are meant to spur additional veteran employment opportunities. And it behooves veterans to know if employers are eligible for one of these credits when hiring them:
Returning Heroes Tax Credit Eligibility:
Short-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $6,000 of wages (up to $2,400) for employers who hire veterans who have received unemployment for at least 4 weeks.
Long-term Unemployed: A new credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have received unemployment for longer than 6 months.
Wounded Warriors Tax Credit Eligibility:
Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: Maintains the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for veterans with service-connected disabilities not more than one year after being discharged from the military, which is up to 40% of the first $12,000 of wages (up to $4,800).
Long-Term Unemployed Veterans with Services-Connected Disabilities: A new credit of 40% of the first $24,000 of wages (up to $9,600) for firms that hire veterans with service-connected disabilities veterans with service-connected disabilities who have received unemployment for longer than 6 months.
As part of the Joining Forces initiative, President Obama announced three new programs in effect immediately that are aimed at helping unemployed veterans find civilian careers.
Veterans Job Bank: Run by the National Resource Directory, this job bank contains more than 500,000 job openings specially tagged for veterans by employers.
My Next Move: This tool allows veterans to match civilian careers with their military experience, as well as view specifics about that career path, including salaries, training, outlook, etc.
Veteran Gold Card: Issued by the Department of Labor, the Gold Card can be downloaded and gives veterans access to six months of personalized case management, assessments, and counseling at One-Stop Career Centers located across the country.
Finally, companies like LinkedIn and Google have joined in the effort by offering specialized services for veterans. (And don't forget to join Orion's Military Network on LinkedIn.)
LinkedIn will be tagging job postings that could be filled by veterans to enable the postings to appear on the newly-launched Veterans Job Bank listed above.
LinkedIn has launched a microsite for veterans with tips, tools, and information on the best ways to find new opportunities across the LinkedIn network.
LinkedIn is offering all U.S. veterans a free one-year Job Seeker subscription. All veterans with updated military experience on their profiles should have received an email with more information on how to take advantage of this offer.
Google has developed a microsite that compiles free Google products that are useful to veterans and their families.
Transitioning from the military into the civilian workforce takes planning and determination. The tools listed above will help arm any transitioning veteran with the ammunition to take on their civilian job search. Orion is here to help make that transition easier, as well!
Orion Pledges Support to Joining Forces
Orion is proud to announce our participation in Joining Forces, the White House initiative led by President and Mrs. Obama, and Vice President and Dr. Biden.
Joining Forces is a national initiative to involve all sectors of society to provide improved opportunities to Veterans and their families in the areas of Employment, Education, and Wellness. Through this initiative, President Obama has issued a challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 unemployed Veterans and their spouses.
Orion’s commitment to Joining Forces:
Orion will expand its Career Assistance Services to reach the Veteran Categories most affected by unemployment, as well as Military Spouses.
Orion and Joining Forces will co- host Military Hiring Events at military installations around the country to match transitioning Service Members with companies seeking to hire Military talent.
Orion will provide consultative training programs to educate companies on creating and implementing a Military Recruiting Strategy, increasing their ability to hire and retain Veterans.
Orion is proud to have assisted several Joining Forces companies in achieving their Military Hiring goals in 2011, and greatly appreciates the opportunity to directly participate in the initiative moving forward.

Job Seeker Success Story
Trevor Brewster, Integrated Supply Chain Supervisor
University of Central Florida, 2003
I tried getting myself hired on the civilian side for almost two years. After actively working with Orion for less than a month, I received a job offer. "Nuff said." Chris Davis was INSTRUMENTAL in getting me a second look by Honeywell. If not for him reviewing the notes from the interview and calling me to ask me to reconsider relocating, I would surely have missed this opportunity. He took extra steps to get me a second round interview which "sealed the deal" with a job offer being presented only two days later.
Chris was great, and I hope to have my wife work with him in the coming months. He provided quick responses to questions, gave useful feedback for interview preparation, and was always easily reached via phone. In fact every Orion person I encountered at the Dallas conference was very helpful, knowledgeable, and conveyed a feeling that their ultimate goal was to help each one of us get hired.
In my civilian position, I am in charge of 20 technicians who are responsible for the repair and overhaul of airplane flight deck instruments. For the last several years I have been an Infantry Battalion Communications Officer (S-6). The experience garnered during this time was paramount to being hired with my current civilian employer. I led small teams of up to 20 Soldiers in a fluid environment where each day was different from the next, ensuring priorities were set and tasks were completed on time and to standard. Each of these is directly relatable to what I do for my civilian employer. Without those experiences, I would not have been considered for this position.
Orion exceeded my needs and expectations. I came in expecting it to be like every other job placement service and be handed a list of open positions and asked which I was interested in. Orion did a great job of pre-screening applicants to best match not only the position, but the company, too. My current position truly is a perfect fit. Orion has a system in place that works very well and people who go out of their way to ensure their candidates are prepared for all steps of the job process (resume, interviews, job offer, etc).
