First Lady Celebrates One-Year Anniversary of Joining Forces with Orion Alumnus

Michelle Obama embarked upon a tour on Thursday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of Joining Forces, a White House initiative to increase programs and opportunities for veterans and their families. Mrs. Obama started the tour off at Kansas City Southern, a freight railroad company, in Shreveport, LA, and announced 60,000 veterans and military spouses have been hired through the program in the last year. The event also featured Dave Ebbrecht, Senior VP of Operations at KCS, and Michael Abitago, an Orion alumnus and the 50,000th hire through Joining Forces.

Abitago, a Heavy Equipment Operator in the Army who is transitioning this month, is joining KCS as a Conductor Trainee. He was hired through the Fort Hood Military Hiring Event held in March, which marked the first official Military Hiring Event co-sponsored by The White House Joining Forces initiative to Hire Veterans and Orion. He is one of the 20 veterans hired by KCS in 2012 so far, and will add to the growing percentage of veterans amongst the KCS Shreveport workforce.

"We have 15 new hires that we are onboarding right now that originated from a cooperative effort between our long-standing recruiting partner, Orion International, the Joining Forces campaign, and the ACAP center at Ft Hood,” explains Ebbrecht, “This cooperative effort is reaching those soldiers that are often neglected and yet deserve most of our attention: those young combat vets returning from the front lines. As always, we at KCS are proud to do our part."

Abitago is not the first Orion alumnus at KCS to be recognized in the media. Kelly King, a 2005 United States Military Academy graduate and former Army Captain, was featured both by the Association of American Railroads and in an article in Military Times Edge by Adam Stone. She explains that her military experience greatly prepared her for her career as a Director of International Rail Operations Support at KCS, “My experience in the military prepared me to work in an environment that operates 24/7, address any challenges and issues simultaneously, and communicate with many groups on multiple levels to achieve a common goal or company objective.”

The transferable skills of both Abitago and King are representative of countless veterans who are seeking civilian employment. Mrs. Obama agrees:

Today’s modern battlefield means that our 9/11 generation of veterans has served not only as soldiers or airmen or sailors, but as diplomats -- they’ve served as social workers, as mediators, as educators. They’re directing dozens of their peers -- so they’ve got the management experience. They’re executing highly complex, life-or-death missions, and they’re operating some of the most advanced technology on the planet.

As Joining Forces turns one, Mrs. Obama touted the success of the initiative and the ongoing need to forge ahead at this event. She went on to affirm Ebbrecht’s earlier comment that employers should employ veterans not just “because it’s the right thing to do, not just because it’s a patriotic way to show our support, but because it’s good business as well.  That’s important.  This is good business.” Orion is proud to be a part of this initiative and to continue recruiting veterans for civilian employers who understand that hiring veterans is just good business.

The next Joining Forces Military Hiring Event co-sponsored by Orion will be held April 26 - 27 at Fort Bragg, NC. (See the article below for more information.) You can watch a video of the KCS event as covered by KSLA here

Job Seeker Success Story

Jacob Garcia, Long Range Operations Planner

Excelsior College, 2006; Oklahoma State University, 2010

Chris Hurst was my recruiter, and he did very well in listening to what I actually wanted to do and where I actually wanted to work. One of my needs was to move to New England to be closer to family while being part of an industry that I knew brought real tangible benefit to people -- and both of those were met.

I attended an Orion Hiring Conference where I interviewed with six companies. Three of those companies had me in for a second interview, and I also had a separate onsite interview with another company. Out of the four on site interviews, I received two offers. I turned down the first one because the line of work was just not what I was looking for after the onsite visit. Later, I received the second offer that I ultimately accepted.

My new job meets all my salary, benefits, culture, position, and location needs. Orion took the time to not only listen to my desires, but actually find me opportunities that matched them. They were not concerned with pushing me to take the first job offered, which is something another recruiting agency did.

My military background prepared me in a multitude of ways for my new civilian job as a Long Range Operations Planner for an electric company, from OSHA and other safety standards to checklist and three-part communication, and particularly in crisis management. The ability to assimilate vast amounts of data, break it down, form a plan, and execute the plan with your team are just a few of these skills, along with the ability to remain calm under pressure and to be an effective communicator.

I would like to suggest to other veterans that they be prepared financially for a much longer than anticipated lag time between jobs, as having the proper savings will enable you to take the job that fits you best, without being in a hurry. I also would have liked to have begun my search at least six months prior to separation, rather than the three months I had. I was force shaped, so that simply was not an option for me, but, if you know in advance, take advantage and start early.

Overall, I could not have asked for a better fit for my background and education. Being part of a team that adds real tangible value to the world, from bringing power to a new community service center to restoring lost power to a couple thousand customers after a storm, brings me as much joy as flying for my country did.

From initial contact to job offer Orion made my transition from over a decade of military service to the private sector manageable as opposed to chaotic. In particular, I received quality training on the interview process, which is something I never had to experience before. Now when someone asks me "Tell me about yourself" or "Who are you?", I am more than able to respond with a short one-to-two minute elevator speech.

According to your Peers

“The Orion Hiring Conference was fast, simple, easy, and, most importantly, a pain-free way to do ‘one-stop shopping’ with a variety of companies.  And Todd Phillips did a great job of matching my skill set gained in the Air Force to the companies that I interviewed with. He always updated each step of the way in the hiring process and always asked for my input.  I liked, too, that Orion didn't require me to sign an exclusivity agreement like other agencies require. That flexibility was plus for me in this economy.” - JJ Arpasi, Team Leader

“I worked with Christ Hurst and Nora Liles, and they were very helpful.   And John Collins was very helpful, as well, in giving me advice. He was very knowledgeable when it came to my new position. If there is a need to look for any future job opportunities again, I would not hesitate to work with Orion given their outstanding track record and proven resilience in finding me a position I would be well suited for.” – J.Y., Electrical Technician

“As a Company Commander in Iraq, I feel that I gained immense management and leadership expertise that you just can’t get in the civilian world.  When you can say, ‘Hi, I successfully led, managed, and cared for 193 individuals in the middle of a war and completed all missions,’ it gives your experience a lot more weight than similar civilian experience.

My new official title is Assistant Site Manager.  It will be very similar to an XO job in the Army.  Essentially, I’ll be assisting the Site Manager who would be something similar to a Company Commander (in the Army) and preparing to become a Site Manager myself.

Karin Roberts and Jim Freeze did an excellent job.  I never felt pressured to do something I didn’t want to do or didn’t feel comfortable with. Orion cared about whether or not I got a job that I actually wanted.” – Chad Duke, Assistant Site Manager

“Karin Roberts did everything right. It was a great experience!” – Kevin Leduc, Field Operations Specialist

“I worked with Todd Phillips and DJ Holder at Orion.  Both were very professional and willing to work with me to find a geographic based job, which was one of the most important criteria in my search.  The interview training, resume review, and development for job searching were all very valuable.  Orion was very receptive to my search preferences and worked with me based on my goals.

Orion was far superior to any other JMO placement company that I contacted.  They demonstrated their professionalism through their level of involvement in my career search, communication between me as the candidate and the potential employer, and personal one-on-one training.  Orion, in my opinion, is the best JMO placement firm in the country, and I could not have been more impressed or thankful for Orion's work in helping me find a career.” – Brad Miller, Operations Manager

“I was introduced to Orion by a colleague who found a great job after retiring. I retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant after almost twenty five years of service, thirteen of those being enlisted and began my job as a Client Service Representative with Tiger Text on March 19, 2012. Commissioned as a Medical Service Corps Officer as a Health Care Administrator, I had the necessary skill set and experience for my current position.

I worked with both Todd Phillips and Dan Young and found them to be personable. Their experience ensured that I was fully prepared from the beginning to the end of the entire process!” – Leigh Ann Wright, Client Service Representative

“Orion is the best. I really felt like Orion cares. Keep doing what you do!” – Tad Teichert, Supervisor of Integrated Supply Chain

Eric HinistrozaKarin Roberts, and Gino Marchetti provided me with all the information that I requested and prepared me for my interview with ADECCO by going over questions I should ask and conducting pre-interviews with me. My experience as an Intelligence Team Leader Sergeant in the Army also helped me, as the collection and analytical skills I learned from my deployments will me conduct the data collection that is part of my job with ADECCO.

Orion met all my needs, and, if I ever look for another job, I will use Orion again. Thank you to everyone at Orion for helping me obtain this position!” – Steve Ballinger, Field Operations Specialist

“I worked with Jim Perdue and Mike Wood at Orion and was treated very well by both. They took the time to listen to my needs and worked extremely hard to find employers that were the best fit for me based on my skill set. I wanted to be in a major city, and they did everything possible to match me up with a location that was near or in a major city.

Orion is the best military placement firm. I had a lot more personal interaction with them as compared to other firms, and they made me feel like I was there number one customer. Other firms just treated me like I was one of many.” - Jayson Adams, ISC Supervisor

Nora LilesChris Hurst, and Gary Sadler were very professional and focused on my needs. I liked that I was not contacted with just any job. They waited and contacted me with jobs that fit what I was looking for.

The biggest thing Orion did for me was interview preparation. We didn’t go over the ‘correct’ answers, but answers that would be productive for the interview. This gave me an idea of what areas in my experience I should talk about. It was very helpful, probably the best part of the whole hiring conference, and that alone was worth the trip to conference.” – Ryan Barnes, Global Military Sales Manager

“It has been my pleasure to work with Orion and Karin Roberts. I am nothing but impressed by the ease of the hiring process. The entire process, including plane travel, was arranged by Karin in a manner that I only had to miss one day of work. She arranged this new position so quickly that I that I didn’t need to use any other type of career search. If I ever have to seek a career change again, Orion will be the only place that I call.” – Bill Carlson, Distribution Manager

“Karin Roberts and Orion did an exceptional job meeting my needs. Karin did an excellent job working with me and tailoring her search to fit my specific needs. I enjoyed working with Karin and the entire Orion team and appreciate the work they put into helping me with my job search.” – David Wilson, Supplier Quality Engineer

“Orion matched up and translated my experiences into a leadership and management career in the civilian world. I am now a Production Team Leader with Pridgeon & Clay. And, in fact, I had not considered manufacturing until meeting up with Orion.

Josh Williamson was very helpful in providing information to me quickly and accurately and keeping me informed of upcoming events. Todd Phillips was also very helpful in encouraging me to participate in the conferences and selecting the best companies to fit my background

I would recommend Orion to any of my colleagues in the military. I tried on my own with varying success, but most of the job offers I received were in fields I wasn't interested in. I also tried with other recruiting firms, but they weren't as proactive in following up. Orion employees were very proactive, not only in finding the right jobs for their candidates, but also in keeping in touch.” –Alex Thorsen, Production Team Leader
