Joining Forces Military Hiring Event Bridges the Gap between Veterans and Careers

The Fayetteville Military Hiring Event, held April 26 & 27, marked the second such event co-sponsored by The White House Joining Forces initiative to Hire Veterans, as well as the participating Command Groups and Transition Programs. The two-day event consisted of Interview Preparation with Orion´s Recruiters, briefings by Hiring Managers from each of the companies, and pre-arranged interviews. The event was covered by NBC17 and The Fayetteville Observer, as well as in a blog post by Joining Forces Executive Director, Brad Cooper.

Orion hosted about 15 companies at the event, including Intel, Siemens, Honeywell, Bridgestone, Firestone Kellogg’s, and PNC Bank. These companies interviewed the more than 100 enlisted soldiers to officers in attendance. “Orion is pleased to be able to continue to present transitioning service members with great civilian career opportunities at these Military Hiring Events,” said Mike Starich, President of Orion, “and we look forward to connecting veterans and hiring managers at the remaining 2012 events.”

In attendance at the event was Jason Forrester, Special Assistant, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army. These events mark a shift in the transition process for many soldiers  in accordance with the VOW to Hire Heroes Act signed by President Obama on November 21, 2011, which requires most service members to participate in new and improved transition programs. Forrester recently spoke with the Fort Hood Sentinel about this saying, “There is no doubt that throughout the Army, from the highest levels of leadership through the ranks, we are seeing a change of how the Army is getting Soldiers ready to transition.”

Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Andrew Seiden found the event to be very constructive. “This event was the best veterans’ assistance-type program I have ever seen.  This is the kind of benefit veterans need.  The Orion side was extremely pro-active and professional in getting me to the event and matching me to companies,” Seiden stated, “The companies were professional and eager to find matches.  The whole process was seamless from start to finish.”

The remaining Joining Forces Military Hiring Events of 2012 will be held in Austin, TX, on June 10 & 11, Norfolk, VA, on August 19 & 20, Fort Hood, TX, on September 9 & 10, Camp Lejeune, NC, October 11 & 12, Raleigh, NC, on December 3 & 4, and Fort Campbell, KY, on December 6 & 7.

Job Seeker Success Story

Randy Guest, Sales Engineer

Jacksonville University, 1998

I first learned about Orion through word of mouth and a recommendation from a friend and met Chris Demmons a few years ago at a conference. I stayed in contact with Chris and emailed him last November to inquire about potential jobs and upcoming conferences. He referred me to Mike Wood, and Brian Smith had a couple of companies with positions like I what I was looking for. I wanted a sales position in the southeast that included a base salary plus commission, benefits, company car, etc.

I had several interviews scheduled at the hiring conference, and all were with companies offering my ideal sales position. I was pleased with my interviews but extremely confident about one interview in particular. Compatibility with the interviewer was great, and everything just seemed to mesh.

I was hired as a Sales Engineer by Ellison Technologies, and everything about this company has been a perfect fit for me. The job description, expectations, and any other information provided by Orion were perfect. Just like the military, Ellison Technologies provides all of the tools necessary for success. Also, both organizations invest heavily in training, so you feel confident about their commitment to you.

Everyone I dealt with at Orion did a great job in providing job descriptions, interview coaching, feedback, resume tips, and any other necessary information. I really appreciate the preparation and frequent communication prior to, during, and after the hiring conference.  A great thing about Orion hiring conferences is that you get feedback the same day, so you're not wondering how you did in the interview for several days or even weeks.

I initially enlisted in the Navy as a Sonar Technician and then received my commission in 1998. My military background helps me daily in my new career. The leadership skills I obtained in the military were instrumental throughout the interview process and will continue to help me succeed and standout among my peers. The examples are endless, but my military experiences involving communication, diversity, courage, and attention-to-detail have probably helped me the most. Another huge advantage of military service is the fraternity of veterans that are in our civilian workforce. It never ceases to amaze me how often being a veteran can open a line of communication with a potential customer.

What I really like and appreciate about Orion is their courtesy and professionalism while maintaining a low-stress environment. Competitors of Orion just seem to be uptight and create stress during an important, not stressful event. Orion makes you feel like you're among friends.  And I think it's pretty cool that you guys follow-up after the process is over. Thanks for helping me land what I consider a dream job.

Recruiter Spotlight

Brad Ward

Brad Ward is Orion International’s Army Officer Recruiter for the Western part of the country.  The major army bases that Brad recruits from are Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, Fort Lewis, Fort Carson, and Schofield Barracks.  Brad is originally from West Texas and graduated from Permian High School in 1999 (the Friday Night Lights School).  He then attended Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, for his Bachelors and Masters degrees.

After completing his education, he decided to serve his country in order to contribute to the ongoing military efforts.  Brad’s Grandfather and Great Uncle were both prior service military officers that always told him that the best officers are prior service officers.  So to continue a family tradition and simultaneously pay-off a mound of student loans, Brad enlisted as an Airborne Infantryman.  After completing Basic Training/AIT on Sandhill, as well as Airborne at Ft. Benning, Brad was stationed at Fort Stewart, GA, where he served as a Rifleman, Bradley Gunner, and Rifle Team Leader.  Brad was selected for Officer Candidate School in 2008 and commissioned as an Infantry Officer.  While stationed as an Officer in Hawaii, Brad served as an Anti-Tank Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Interim-Company Commander, BN S4 OIC and BN Assistant Operations Officer.  Brad also deployed to Iraq as the Battalion S4 OIC during the switch from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn.

After returning from Iraq, Brad decided to make the transition out of the military to provide a more stable life for his family.  He began working with Orion International at the end of 2011.  Brad is married to Kayla Ward and has one son, Bradley Ward Jr.

If you could give just one piece of career advice to a transitioning military professional, what would it be?

When selecting a recruiting firm, make sure the firm that you select listens to your wants and needs in a career search.  Geographic location, job type, and input into the interview/transition process are all factors that set Orion apart and make it the most candidate friendly firm out there. Don’t sacrifice what’s important to you to fit a rigid system that doesn’t have your best interests as a priority.

What do you like most about working at Orion?

The Veterans!  When I was leaving the military, I knew that the thing I would miss most were the personalities and people.  Orion afforded me the opportunity to make the transition for my family, start an awesome civilian career, and still maintain daily interaction with Veterans.    The ability to go home knowing that I have assisted fellow Veterans is priceless.

What are you actively recruiting for at the moment?

I'm seeking Engineers for NRG out of Beaumont, TX, Project Managers for Dell in TX, and candidates for Honeywell's Leadership Development Program.

Please share one interesting fact that you would like candidates to know.

I had no idea I was capable of Sales/Recruiting before leaving the Military.  I was a candidate that was completely turned off by the idea of sales and commissions.  It was actually the Orion Recruiters that helped me realize how awesome Sales is as a career and how Military Veterans are an ideal fit.  Competitive, driven, inter-personal, and the desire to be rewarded for your hard work are some of the factors that make strong Sales Candidates.  I encourage all of my candidates to stay open to Sales, because the opportunities are typically more appealing and lucrative!

According to your Peers

“I attended the Chicago Conference and had three interviews. Todd Phillips did an excellent job pairing me with jobs I was interested in, and he continued working with me in advance to prepare me for my interviews.  He worked with me during the conference on interview skills, which reflected during my interviews.  After receiving multiple calls for second interviews, Todd focused on what each company was looking for and the areas I should direct my focus.  Before my third interview, Todd called me to reiterate what IPM was looking for and prepared me to talk about salary and other tough topics.

I will soon be a Project Management Consultant with IPM. My military background as a platoon leader for 20 months and Assistant S-3 (Plans Officer) provided me with valuable leadership experience.  No other job makes you directly responsible for 40 other people and millions of dollars of equipment directly out of college.  My career provided me with confidence to be able to learn, adapt, and overcome challenges when placed in positions of uncertainty.

Orion did an excellent job of meeting my needs and listening to what I was interested in.  They paired me with three management positions, which was my ideal fit. Orion made it easy to talk with them and made the process easy from the conference to the interviews.” – Andrew Hazlett, Project Management Consultant

“My recruiter, Mike Wood, is an excellent communicator and a valuable resource for Orion.” - Robert Fell, Assistant Manager for Quality Control

“As soon as I contacted Orion, they immediately started trying to match me with jobs and got me involved in a mini-conference on very short notice. Tim Duba and Karin Roberts were my recruiters. They were the best thing about this whole experience – they were friendly, gave great advice, and really took the time to get to know me, so they could help find the best fit for me. Jim Perdue was also incredibly helpful, and I really appreciate all the work he did to help me find the right company.

I used a different military recruiting service when I first left the military, and Orion is far superior. The other service did not even compare when it comes to personalized service. My recruiters and the account reps really took time to get to know me and I really felt like the whole team was invested in my success.

Everyone on Orion’s team was helpful. I applied for several jobs on my own and did not get any interest, but Orion had me in front of interviewers within a week of calling them. Every single recruiter and account rep I talked to took his or her time to find out about me and was honest about the jobs and company involved. I got great advice, great support, and finally a great job. I don’t know how anyone finds a job in this economy without a service like Orion’s. Thanks!” – Price Lykins, Account Manager

"I came across Orion International as I was in the midst of a long and not terribly fruitful job search and decided to give it a shot. I wasn't sure what—if anything—to expect, as I'd never worked with a recruiter. The very next day, I received a phone call in which the recruiting manager explained how the process worked, talked through my background and what I was looking for in a career, and then immediately began working to get me plugged into the next hiring conference (which was only a week out!).

I was truly impressed by the deep understanding that the Orion personnel clearly had of how to translate military experience. Orion conducted some phenomenal and practical instruction at the workshops, and I interviewed with two companies I was interested in, both of which resulted in second interviews ... and third and fourth interviews ... and finally in job offers!

Throughout the entire process, multiple Orion personnel were available to answer questions, explain each step, and even make sure the companies were holding up their end of the deal. I was seriously impressed with how professional and precise the Orion-driven job search experience was and how knowledgeable and helpful the recruiters and account executives were the entire time.” - Hallie Brewer, Administrator

“I began my job search in August 2011 as a head start to when I left the military in February 2012. I learned about Orion at a TAP class through Karin Roberts, who did a great job throughout the process. In particular, she took into account the type of career that I wanted to pursue and provided positive realistic feedback on what I could expect. Additionally, her candid advice on being open to multiple locations opened the door for opportunities that I hadn’t even considered.

I went through two hiring conferences, with seven total interviews. That was followed up by an on-site interview at my new employer’s location and a job offer within the week.  I will be the Program Manager of Quality Assurance, and I feel it is very much in line with the Lean Six Sigma training and experience I gained in the Navy.

Orion more than met my needs. During a three month period I was presented with over 40 diverse career opportunities. In the end, I received an offer from my number one company, with my ideal salary and outstanding career potential.

My experience with Orion was outstanding. From day one, the Orion team fought hard to get me the career I was looking for. I have to give thumbs up to Joel Rueckert for his negotiation of my employment at my new company. Tim Duba’s work on the hiring conferences was extremely helpful and definitely prepared me for interviews. Additionally, Jim Perdue’s tenacity to find my next career was much appreciated. Overall, a great experience. Thanks for all the help.” – Brian Hockin, Program Manager

“I am currently in the Air Force Reserve and started looking for jobs in October just to see what was out there. Orion International contacted me a few months later, and I then attended a webinar, had three phone interviews, and a morning interview preparation prior to a 20 minute interview with ADECCO for my current position.

My job in Field Operations has so many parallels to my position in the Air Force. I feel like my military background has well prepared me for this position. It’s very physically demanding and technical.

Gino Marchetti took care of me at Orion. He handled my needs very respectfully and professionally. Orion absolutely met my needs. Many different people were there to see if I had questions or needed anything. The process was very thorough.” – Bethany Banks, Field Operations Specialist

“I left the military in March 2012 as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army, serving as a Platoon Leader, Operations Staff Officer, and Battle Captain in the Armor Branch. I found out about Orion online. I first had an informational meeting with Jim Freeze at Joint-Base Lewis-McChord and then went to two hiring conferences in Seattle.

My recruiter was Karin Roberts, and she is one of the most professional recruiters I have had the pleasure of working with. She found a perfect fit for me with a great company. I had previously worked with a few recruiters from other recruitment firms, but they consistently seemed more concerned with their own needs rather than my needs.

Orion went above and beyond my expectations. The company is truly a professional organization, and I would recommend to anyone transitioning out of the Armed Services that they contact Orion first, before they contact any other recruiting firm. Orion beats the competition, hands down.” – Geoff Oakley, Site Inventory Manager

“Bob Berkholz was my recruiter. I could not be happier with how Bob treated me. I felt like I was his only concern during the entire process, even though he was dealing with hundreds of candidates.

I am currently a Production Superintendent for First Quality Retail Services. My new career parallels my military career in many ways; I would equate my current responsibilities with those of a Major in the Army. I am responsible for over 200 people and the day-to-day production of the plant. Also, my military background as an aviation branch Captain in the Army gave me the technical knowledge I needed to understand the machinery involved, as well as the leadership skills I needed to take a leadership position at my new company.

To reiterate, I felt like I was the only person Orion was trying to find a job, and that was VERY reassuring! I can’t imagine how long it would have taken me to find a job on my own, and I will always be grateful to the folks at Orion who took the time to help me out. I will tell every service member I come in contact with that is looking for a job about Orion and the great job they did for me!” – Gaberial Sisney, Production Superintendent

“I was referred to Orion by a fellow Marine Corps officer, and ended up working with Tim Duba, who was excellent. He set me up with one interview and then a hiring conference. In my opinion, Orion is a cut above the competition, and I have recommended many friends to Orion.” – Jason Pohly, Repair Center Supervisor

“I worked with recruiters from both the Austin office and the San Diego office. Both sides were helpful in helping me to improve my interviewing skills. They were especially understanding and helpful about coordinating between regional offices to allow me to commence my job search in a much wider regional base.

I’ve attended four hiring conferences in San Diego and two in Dallas, often with four to six interviews back to back. I’m now a Project Engineer with Sachs Electric, on track to become a Project Manager in commercial construction.

Orion was extremely helpful, and their conferences were put together very well. I had by far the best interviews through Orion. This is the most difficult job market I’ve ever seen, and they were the only ones that could reliably get me actual interviews for relevant positions. I would like to thank Bob Berkholz, Amy Donsbach, and Tim Duba for their patience as they helped me repeatedly through the conferences.” – John Taylor, Project Engineer

“My recruiter was Tim Duba, and he is an awesome guy. He was not pushy, was very knowledgeable, and was attentive to my needs. I would highly recommend him to any of my peers. He seemed to genuinely care about my needs rather than trying to force me into a role I didn’t want nor fit into.

I will be the Manager of Business Development – Federal Government for Siemens Industry/Building Technologies. I was selected specifically because of my prior service in the military, so my time in the military was invaluable. My position is perfect for me, and I couldn’t have made up a better position myself.

Orion’s service is much stronger, blowing away the competition. They are much better at pairing candidates with positions. Thank you, Orion! You provide a fantastic service for transitioning (and re-transitioning) service members. I am very excited about this upcoming phase of my life.”– Jon Lyman, Manager of Business Development – Federal Government

“As a Supply Officer in the Navy, I gained an excellent background in engaging companies that I use in my position as a Sales Manager at Siemens Energy. Supply chain management is an obvious parallel, but the best thing about my military experience is the leadership background. It gave me the flexibility in the job search and did not pigeon hole me.

Mike Wood was engaging and responsive. And those are two of the most important attributes during a job search, because you never want to feel left in the dark. He addressed my needs and met my specific requirements.

If you are an assertive, hard working individual who can engage people, then you are capable of being very successful. I would encourage everyone to do their homework on every part of the hiring process. Always work to strengthen your value to potential employers.  Be honest with people in regards to your job search and your legitimate interest in opportunities. Most importantly, never close any door.” - Matthew Hall, Sales Manager

“Todd Phillips took my input and met my career search needs quite well.” - Steven Stefaniak, Project Engineer
