Joining Forces Military Hiring Event Bridges the Gap between Veterans and Careers


The Fayetteville Military Hiring Event, held April 26 & 27, marked the second such event co-sponsored by The White House Joining Forces initiative to Hire Veterans, as well as the participating Command Groups and Transition Programs. The two-day event consisted of Interview Preparation with Orion´s Recruiters, briefings by Hiring Managers from each of the companies, and pre-arranged interviews. The event was covered by NBC17 and The Fayetteville Observer, as well as in a blog post by Joining Forces Executive Director, Brad Cooper.

Orion hosted about 15 companies at the event, including Intel, Siemens, Honeywell, Bridgestone, Firestone Kellogg’s, and PNC Bank. These companies interviewed the more than 100 enlisted soldiers to officers in attendance. “Orion is pleased to be able to continue to present transitioning service members with great civilian career opportunities at these Military Hiring Events,” said Mike Starich, President of Orion, “and we look forward to connecting veterans and hiring managers at the remaining 2012 events.”

In attendance at the event was Jason Forrester, Special Assistant, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army. These events mark a shift in the transition process for many soldiers  in accordance with the VOW to Hire Heroes Act signed by President Obama on November 21, 2011, which requires most service members to participate in new and improved transition programs. Forrester recently spoke with the Fort Hood Sentinel about this saying, “There is no doubt that throughout the Army, from the highest levels of leadership through the ranks, we are seeing a change of how the Army is getting Soldiers ready to transition.” 

Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Andrew Seiden found the event to be very constructive. “This event was the best veterans’ assistance-type program I have ever seen.  This is the kind of benefit veterans need.  The Orion side was extremely pro-active and professional in getting me to the event and matching me to companies,” Seiden stated, “The companies were professional and eager to find matches.  The whole process was seamless from start to finish.” 

The remaining Joining Forces Military Hiring Events of 2012 will be held in Austin, TX, on June 10 & 11, Norfolk, VA, on August 19 & 20, Fort Hood, TX, on September 9 & 10, Camp Lejeune, NC, October 11 & 12, Raleigh, NC, on December 3 & 4, and Fort Campbell, KY, on December 6 & 7.

Project Management Careers with T H Hill


Orion is currently recruiting for Project Managers for T H Hill in Houston, TX. In this position, you will work as the liaison between T H Hill’s quality assurance technicians and assigned clients to reduce non-productive time associated with drilling and completions equipment for the client. You will report to the Manager of Technical Services.

These positions are quite challenging and require critical thinking, process development, mapping, management, personnel management, presentation development and delivery, database management, and metrics development and tracking skills, among others.


  • Work with, direct, and in some cases supervise the activity of field level quality assurance personnel assigned to the team.

  • Identify customer needs

  • Monitor and advise the customer of job progress

  • Ensure that lessons learned and customer requirements are catalogued and disseminated, as appropriate.

  • Work with Sales to interface with the client and illustrate areas of added value

T H Hill will provide you all of the tools and resources you will need to succeed in the role, including several months of training in the field and within the Engineering, Sales, and Technical Services departments.

Honeywell U.S. Army Integrated Logistics Support Service Program



Orion is currently recruiting for  Quality Assurance Operations positions for Honeywell to fulfill the U.S. Army’s Integrated Logistics Support Service Program. Under the contract, Honeywell is managing global inventory, maintenance, and operations for three Army Field Support Brigades.

You should be able to start before August 1st. Pay is highly competitive, and all positions are located in Afghanistan.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applied science, such as Business

  • Five (5) years of demonstrated experience working in the logistical field, or at least ten (10) years of program related experience

  • Must have experience with MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and working knowledge of Access database programs

  • Quality management or related discipline

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the evaluation of processes and controls, along with the ability to inspect or evaluate workforce performance to the process

I first learned about Orion through word of mouth and a recommendation from a friend and met Chris Demmons a few years ago at a conference. I initially enlisted in the Navy as a Sonar Technician and then received my commission in 1998. My military background helps me daily in my new career. National Distinguished Candidate Conference – June 4 & 5 in San Diego, CA

Brad Ward


Brad Ward is Orion International’s Army Officer Recruiter for the Western part of the country.  The major army bases that Brad recruits from are Fort Hood, Fort Bliss, Fort Lewis, Fort Carson, and Schofield Barracks.  Brad is originally from West Texas and graduated from Permian High School in 1999 (the Friday Night Lights School).  He then attended Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, for his Bachelors and Masters degrees.  

After completing his education, he decided to serve his country in order to contribute to the ongoing military efforts.  Brad’s Grandfather and Great Uncle were both prior service military officers that always told him that the best officers are prior service officers.  So to continue a family tradition and simultaneously pay-off a mound of student loans, Brad enlisted as an Airborne Infantryman.  After completing Basic Training/AIT on Sandhill, as well as Airborne at Ft. Benning, Brad was stationed at Fort Stewart, GA, where he served as a Rifleman, Bradley Gunner, and Rifle Team Leader.  Brad was selected for Officer Candidate School in 2008 and commissioned as an Infantry Officer.  While stationed as an Officer in Hawaii, Brad served as an Anti-Tank Platoon Leader, Executive Officer, Interim-Company Commander, BN S4 OIC and BN Assistant Operations Officer.  Brad also deployed to Iraq as the Battalion S4 OIC during the switch from Operation Iraqi Freedom to Operation New Dawn.  

After returning from Iraq, Brad decided to make the transition out of the military to provide a more stable life for his family.  He began working with Orion International at the end of 2011.  Brad is married to Kayla Ward and has one son, Bradley Ward Jr.  

If you could give just one piece of career advice to a transitioning military professional, what would it be?

When selecting a recruiting firm, make sure the firm that you select listens to your wants and needs in a career search.  Geographic location, job type, and input into the interview/transition process are all factors that set Orion apart and make it the most candidate friendly firm out there. Don’t sacrifice what’s important to you to fit a rigid system that doesn’t have your best interests as a priority.

What do you like most about working at Orion?

The Veterans!  When I was leaving the military, I knew that the thing I would miss most were the personalities and people.  Orion afforded me the opportunity to make the transition for my family, start an awesome civilian career, and still maintain daily interaction with Veterans.    The ability to go home knowing that I have assisted fellow Veterans is priceless.
