President Obama Calls for Permanent Tax Credits for Hiring Veterans

Under President Obama, there have been wide-ranging legislation and programs designed to train, educate, license, and employ veterans, including Joining Forces, the Veteran Gold Card, Veterans Job Bank, Veteran Skills to Job Act, and Veteran’s Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP). In this ongoing effort to quell veteran unemployment, the Obama Administration has also incentivized employers for hiring veterans through two tax credits, Returning Heroes and Wounded Warriors tax credits.

Set to expire December 31, 2013, the Returning Heroes Tax credit provides incentives of up to $5,600 for hiring unemployed veterans, and the Wounded Warriors Tax Credit doubles the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit for long-term unemployed veterans with service-connected disabilities, to up to $9,600. Signed into law in November 2011, the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 extended the credits through this year.

On April 5, President Obama addressed their expiration by including a permanent provision for them in his FY2014 Budget. Information released by The White House Blog by Denis McDonough, Chief of Staff to President Obama, and Gene Sperling, Director of the National Economic Council and Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, indicates that there has been a near doubling of the number of veterans hired through tax credits in 2012 when compared to the previous year. McDonough and Sperling call these tax credits “a critical tool to spur more robust hiring of some of our nation’s most skilled workers.”

The last few years have brought about many initiatives aimed at facilitating veterans’ transition to the civilian workplace, and a permanent tax credit for hiring veterans would be yet another in a long list of reasons why companies should seek out veterans for their open positions. From the technical, leadership, and operational skills inherent in veterans, to the non-tangible skills like integrity, teamwork, and efficiency, companies who hire veterans are not just availing themselves of a tax credit, but adding a valued employee to their team.

Veteran Employment Summit Reveals Increase in Veteran Hiring

Following the first National Veteran Employment Summit on December 12, 2012, Monster and Military.com have released a report detailing findings and recommendations for both hiring and retaining veterans.

The Summit was composed of senior military and government officials, academic leaders, human resource professionals, and military veterans and covered the issue of veteran employment from the veterans’s viewpoint, as well as the employer’s and the government’s. The resulting report, which provides five key recommendations for employers, provides a sunny forecast for veterans transitioning into the civilian sector.

Despite a seven percent drop in career confidence, according to the Veterans Talent Index, employers are increasingly hiring veterans. The same index shows that 69% of the 750 employers surveyed, hired a veteran in the past year. 99.9% said that they were doing as well or better than their nonveteran peers. And nearly all would recommend hiring a veteran to another company.

According to the report, there are two main challenges facing transitioning veterans today: they feel pigeon-holed in their military occupational specialty (MOS) and they feel unprepared for the civilian job market. Both of these hurdles can be overcome when both veterans and employers work to better understand one another.

Veterans can surmount the first hurdle of skills translation by spending more time relating their military skill sets to corporate job skills. My Next Move is a very useful resource introduced as part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative where you can search for career fields based on your interests, browse career fields by industry, or, most importantly, enter your MOC and translate it directly to a civilian career field.

And while translators like may not be the final word on what you are qualified for, they can give you keywords related to your MOS that might point you in the direction of your new career. You can also visit Transition Corner, which covers this topic in depth.

Veterans feeling unprepared for life outside the military will find a new level of support and training in the newly revamped Transition GPS program. Developed by the Veterans Employment Initiative Task Force, Transition GPS will be implemented by the end of 2013 and will extend the transition program period from 3 days to 5-7 days; strengthen, standardize, and expand counseling and guidance for service members before leaving the military; and transform the military’s approach to education, training, and credentialing for service members.

Now is a great time to begin searching for a civilian career, as veteran employment has never been so prominently featured in the national discourse. American companies are increasingly recognizing what a talented group our nation’s veterans are and are turning to these job candidates to find the future leaders of their companies.

Kevin Schmiegel, Vice President of Hiring Our Heroes at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce spoke at the Summit and said it best: "[Veterans] are team players, they have an incredible work ethic, they can change a business fundamentally and improve productivity.”

Job Seeker Success Story

Anthony Carter, Field Service Specialist

I am extremely pleased with where I am now. When I first started job hunting, I became discouraged very quickly, because I could not find a job that would pay anywhere close to what I was earning in the military along with having benefits. Before I started interviewing through Orion, I submitted my resume to 76 different companies, had three face-to-face interviews, and had one phone interview. None of the companies had any benefits, and they weren't willing to give me much for pay.

Orion met and surpassed all the job requirements that I set forth. I asked for a job that was within the surrounding states; and I now work in Maryland, only four hours away. I asked for the company to have good benefits, because I have to look out for my family, as well. Siemens has medical, dental, vision, 401k, and a lot more. And the criteria that I thought would make it tough would be earning no less than $50,000 a year. Orion made that happen, then some.

Tony Hoffman was my recruiter, and he was very straight forward, honest, and respectful. My first actual interview was at a January hiring conference where I interviewed with six companies, got three second interviews, and two job offers.

I am now working at Siemens as a Field Service Specialist. The job is fast paced and continually changing as it was for me in the military. I was a Construction Mechanic E-5 in the Navy and feel that the experience that I gained made me a well-rounded tradesman with many skills. This meant I could choose the field in which I wanted to go, not just sticking with the field that matched my rate. Through the military I achieved many certifications and experiences, including HVAC, which is the field that I chose to go with.

Within three weeks of getting out of the military, I was hired on with Siemens. I could not have found a better recruiting company than Orion. The companies may be the ones who pay them, but you are their priority. And they perform their job like professionals. Thank you, Orion and Tony!

According to Your Peers

“I believe the southeast recruiting team at Orion is bar none the best group that you have. John Teague and Mark Kraft followed through with me from presenting me with my opportunity with Mercedes-Benz, to getting me prepared to go to the plant, and all the way to the interviews and the offer stage. I have loved every minute of my job here at Mercedes. They have treated me with the highest respect and have given me extensive training. Orion met my expectations ten-fold! – Jake Mussler, Maintenance Technician

“I worked with Mike Wooster, Matt Clingon, Dave Conner, and Gary Sadler at Orion. This group of professionals took the time to get to know me and my needs and match me with a company and position that fit my personality, Manufacturing Supervisor with Remington Arms.

I attended a hiring conference in Fishkill, NY, and would recommend this process for anyone transitioning into the private sector. Working with Orion was a very rewarding experience and one that I have recommended to others.” – Barry Cates, Manufacturing Supervisor

“Gino Marchetti did a great job matching my skills and career goals with the needs of the company. I asked him advice on the position once it was offered, and I felt he gave me honest advice rather than just trying to put me in a job for his own gain. Also, communication was excellent throughout the process. I have referred several of my military colleagues that are nearing separation/retirement to Orion.

The job I hold now is very similar to Expediting and Planning & Scheduling activities in the USAF. It requires good organization, communication, and troubleshooting skills, in addition to working together as a team. The climate is fast-paced.” - Scott Munden, Technical Support Administrator

“Tony Hoffman IS my recruiter. He did such a great job that I refuse to say that he ‘was’ my recruiter. Everything that Tony has done for me was one-on-one and directly helped my growth. I honestly feel like Tony cares more about me than I do. He is a great recruiter and a great person.

If I needed anything, Tony and Orion were there for me. I was not just a number with Orion, and they make sure you know it. I had people from almost every office nationwide communicating with me, giving me advice, and even going as far as to call me to check in and make sure that everything was going well. I think of every Orion team member as a part of my extended family.

I can honestly say if you listen to your Orion recruiter and develop your interview skills, promote your abilities, and communicate, there is no reason why Orion cannot put you in front of companies that will hire you. However, you must take charge of your career and LISTEN TO YOUR RECRUITER!!!” - Joseph Wilson, Product Support Representative

“I worked with Dave Conner, John Collins, and Mike Wooster at Orion. They listened to everything I asked for in a job and pointed me in the direction they thought would be best to secure that job.” – Douglas Prunier, Appliance In-Home Service Professional

“Previous to my civilian career, I held a supervisory position in the Navy as an E-5 Machinist Mate. My military training helps a lot as far as the training, knowledge, and basic daily activities of my new career. The Navy prepares a person without the person even knowing they’re being prepared for the next step in life.

I came to Orion through a colleague’s referral. Mike Wooster treated me as if he knew me for years but always maintained professionalism. By all means and at all costs, he heard me clearly and made things happen based around my schedule.

I submitted my resume via the Orion website and heard back from Mike the next day. He called with a job already in mind, so he did his research before he called me. That job did not turn out to be the job for me, so he kept his foot on the gas pedal and went to the next stop. Soon after, he emailed me info on Valerus, my new employer, and asked if I was interested. My reply was 'most definitely!'

Orion recruiters are straight forward and very friendly on a professional level. The drive they have is one that only veterans can have. Motivation + Drive = Success, and Orion recruiters use this equation every time they pick up a phone to contact a veteran! I applaud them. Keep up the good work, and I will tell all my friends leaving the military who are looking for work to stop first at Orion!” – Henry Rome, Compressor Mechanic

“Orion exceeded my expectations. I wouldn't be where I am today without Tony Hoffman, who couldn’t have been a more enthusiastic and helpful person. Tony also took the time to answer my questions and provide feedback for me after my interviews. I can't say enough good things about him and the whole crew who assisted in my job search.

I have already referred one friend of mine to Orion, and I would definitely recommend them without hesitation. The job search process, while stressful due to the time constraint I had, couldn't have gone so smoothly without Orion at the helm. Thanks a million!” - Kevin Mabe, Technical Services Supervisor

“Orion International was an excellent company to work with, and I think other transitioning military members would be remiss to not at least give them a chance. Orion exceeded all the expectations that I had for using a recruiting company. They were the only recruiting company that I found that actually cared about what I had to say.

Other ones would just send me emails multiple times for the same position while Tony Hoffman, my Orion recruiter, talked to me directly. Tony is a great guy that I would recommend to anyone transitioning out of the military. His dedication and sincerity in recruiting are what made me want to work only with Orion transitioning out of the military.” - Charles Hendon, Welding Technician III

“I am on terminal leave now and achieved my goal of getting hired before getting out of the military! I am now an Electrician with Nucor Steel. I learned most of the fundamentals I needed to be successful in an electrical/electronic career as an Aegis Fire Controlman First Class (E-6) in the Navy, but, most of all, I learned practical life knowledge. This knowledge has been much more important in the grand scheme of things than any of the knowledge I can pick up a book for. Experiencing ups and downs in the Navy really taught me to do more with less, to be patient and polite, responsibility for millions of dollars’ worth of equipment, and to be confident in stressful situations.

Tony Hoffman from Orion was absolutely outstanding when it came to assisting me with everything from resume writing to pre-interview jitters. He kept me level headed about expectations and kept me excited and confident during the sometimes frustrating hiring process.

When the interviewer from my company had to cancel at the last minute, Tony stayed on top of things with the help of John Collins, and they got me a phone interview the next week with the interviewer. It all fell into place from there. I spoke with him prior to all three interviews with Nucor, and he gave me all the advice I needed to be successful. I can't thank Tony and John enough for leading me to this wonderful career opportunity!” – Annie Kordecki, Electrician

“I was a little wary after a bad experience with a different recruiting firm, but Orion, especially Tony Hoffman, went above and beyond to help me find a position. In the end, Tony and Rob Gumpper were instrumental in placing me in a job with great benefits.” – Wayne Schlessman, Inspector Trainee
