Orion Participates in 2-Year Joining Forces Anniversary

April 30, 2013, marked the two-year anniversary of Joining Forces, a national initiative to involve all sectors of society to provide improved opportunities to Veterans and their families in the areas of Employment, Education, and Wellness. In April 2011, President Obama issued a challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 Veterans by 2014.

To mark the 2-year anniversary, First Lady Michelle Obama announced that America’s businesses have nearly tripled the goal set by President Obama, and did so eight months early. According to Mrs. Obama, the private sector has already hired or trained 290,000 veterans and military spouses since the start of the program; with commitments from American companies to hire or train another 435,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years.

Orion was honored to be included in the anniversary event, which was held in the East Room of the White House. David Coe, former Marine Corps Officer and Vice President – Strategic Programs at Orion International, as well as Mike Wooster, former Navy Aviation Electronics Technician and Candidate Recruiter at Orion, attended on behalf of Orion. 

Orion is proud to have assisted several Joining Forces companies in achieving their Military Hiring goals in 2011 and 2012. And having exceeded our own pledge to Joining Forces in 2012, Orion was invited to publicly recommit to this important initiative through Military Hiring Events and consultative training programs to educate companies on creating and implementing a Military Recruiting Strategy.

White House Announces New IT Credentialing Program for Service Members

Monday, April 29, marked the announcement of another veteran initiative by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House Forum on Military Credentialing and Licensing. This new initiative, called the IT Training and Certification Partnership, is aimed at helping veterans more easily find jobs in the tech sector by completing training and earning industry-recognized IT certifications prior to their transition out of the military.

A White House Fact Sheet on the Partnership estimates that about 161,000 service members would gain the necessary certifications for 12 high-demand technology professions, including computer programming, quality assurance, and information security. There will be 1.8 million openings in the targeted fields through the end of the decade, and these jobs will provide an average salary of $81,000+.

Service members often have the most up-to-date technological training but may lack the required certifications for civilian IT jobs. In addition to correcting this issue, the program will also allow veterans to fill in any gaps in their training required for employment in civilian positions.

Along with the announcement, the forum featured four round tables exploring ways to make it easier for service members to earn the civilian certifications and licenses required for jobs in emergency medical services, healthcare and transportation sectors, as well as ways to translate their military training into academic credit.

Among the companies supporting the program are Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, and CompTIA. As an example of the type of support they are providing, CompTIA is donating vouchers for certification exams, such as CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Security+, to program participants.

A blog post on The Hill quotes Gene Sperling, the director of the National Economic Council, as calling the IT/military partnership "a triple win", saying it is a win for service members, a win for businesses, and a win for the economy. We agree. America’s military veterans possess world-class technological training, and a program such as this will enable them to put that knowledge to work in a rewarding civilian career.

Wind Turbine Technician Description:

This position is responsible for the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of wind turbine generators. You will perform testing, troubleshooting and repair of mechanical and electrical problems on variable pitch, variable speed turbines. You will assist in other areas of site construction, installation and commissioning as required and directed by designated site supervision.

Salary: $18/hour, plus overtime (average of 10-20 hrs of overtime per week when traveling).

Location: You can live anywhere in the United States within a reasonable distance to an airport.

Requirements: This position is a traveling position and you must be able to travel up to 6 weeks at a time and work up to 50-60 hours per week if needed, to meet project and maintenance schedules. You will perform weekend operations and repair of wind turbine generators as needed. You need the ability to consistently climb wind turbine towers up to 300 feet in height, up to 3 times a day.

Qualifications:

To perform the job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Familiarity with Direct Current Electricity, Alternating Current Electricity and Electronics.

Maintenance Supervisor

With minimal direction and input from senior leadership, this position is expected to independently propose, plan, and execute projects to eliminate the root cause of manufacturing problems; independently execute projects of extremely high complexity which have a large impact on the on the company's current and/or future business interests; handle projects dealing with software, hardware, or procedural nature relating to processes, equipment or people. The Maintenance Supervisor is also expected to take a leadership role in their Business Unit Team.

  • Ensure that the entire maintenance area of responsibility proactively supports all plant goals including safety measures. Establish maintenance measures that fully support other plant goals.
  • Coordinate and administer daily interaction between all aspects of maintenance in your area of responsibility and all other departments in the plant.
  • Ensure that maintenance personnel have proper qualifications, are properly trained, and motivated to work productively both as part of a team and individually utilizing all TPM processes.
  • Ensure compliance with established standards and procedures involving safety, sanitation, good manufacturing policies, housekeeping and other plant programs.
  • Ensure compliance with administrative and reporting procedures.
  • Operate as the plant monitor including scheduling and complying to all aspects of SAP PM (PM's completed on time, work orders completed and properly documented, etc.), and champion proactive maintenance verses reactive maintenance.
  • Actively participate, initiate and fully develop support all TPM initiatives both personally and with all maintenance personnel reporting to supervisor.
  • Ensure all equipment and tools for which responsible are maintained in the proper operating condition to meet established plant needs, established safety, and sanitation, and etc., standards.

Salary: $65,000 – 80,000, plus OT and/or bonus
