Orion Participates in 2-Year Joining Forces Anniversary

April 30, 2013, marked the two-year anniversary of Joining Forces, a national initiative to involve all sectors of society to provide improved opportunities to Veterans and their families in the areas of Employment, Education, and Wellness. In April 2011, President Obama issued a challenge to the private sector to hire or train 100,000 Veterans by 2014.

To mark the 2-year anniversary, First Lady Michelle Obama announced that America’s businesses have nearly tripled the goal set by President Obama, and did so eight months early. According to Mrs. Obama, the private sector has already hired or trained 290,000 veterans and military spouses since the start of the program; with commitments from American companies to hire or train another 435,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years.

Orion was honored to be included in the anniversary event, which was held in the East Room of the White House. David Coe, former Marine Corps Officer and Vice President – Strategic Programs at Orion International, as well as Mike Wooster, former Navy Aviation Electronics Technician and Candidate Recruiter at Orion, attended on behalf of Orion.

Orion is proud to have assisted several Joining Forces companies in achieving their Military Hiring goals in 2011 and 2012. And having exceeded our own pledge to Joining Forces in 2012, Orion was invited to publicly recommit to this important initiative through Military Hiring Events and consultative training programs to educate companies on creating and implementing a Military Recruiting Strategy.

With commitments from the private sector, Joining Forces continues to gain momentum, as evidenced in the video below featuring Orion alumnus Jeff Metcalf:

White House Announces New IT Credentialing Program for Service Members

Monday, April 29, marked the announcement of another veteran initiative by First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House Forum on Military Credentialing and Licensing. This new initiative, called the IT Training and Certification Partnership, is aimed at helping veterans more easily find jobs in the tech sector by completing training and earning industry-recognized IT certifications prior to their transition out of the military.

A White House Fact Sheet on the Partnership estimates that about 161,000 service members would gain the necessary certifications for 12 high-demand technology professions, including computer programming, quality assurance, and information security. There will be 1.8 million openings in the targeted fields through the end of the decade, and these jobs will provide an average salary of $81,000+.

Service members often have the most up-to-date technological training but may lack the required certifications for civilian IT jobs. In addition to correcting this issue, the program will also allow veterans to fill in any gaps in their training required for employment in civilian positions.

Along with the announcement, the forum featured four round tables exploring ways to make it easier for service members to earn the civilian certifications and licenses required for jobs in emergency medical services, healthcare and transportation sectors, as well as ways to translate their military training into academic credit.

Among the companies supporting the program are Cisco, Microsoft, Oracle, and CompTIA. As an example of the type of support they are providing, CompTIA is donating vouchers for certification exams, such as CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Security+, to program participants.

A blog post on The Hill quotes Gene Sperling, the director of the National Economic Council, as calling the IT/military partnership "a triple win", saying it is a win for service members, a win for businesses, and a win for the economy. We agree. America’s military veterans possess world-class technological training, and a program such as this will enable them to put that knowledge to work in a rewarding civilian career.

According to Your Peers

“Regardless of military specialty, it prepares you for experience beyond what would be entrusted in the civilian workforce. My background as an enlisted Transportation Specialist and First Lieutenant in Ordnance has prepared me to be comfortable in heavy machinery environment but aware of how important safety is and identifying shortfalls. Most important is the ability to work with people from across the U.S. and other countries.

I have yet to start my position as a Production Supervisor in steel manufacturing, but would compare what I had seen on sight to Support Operations Section. Each person on a shift has specialized skills that they use to perform their jobs, like the special MOSs I have worked with over my years in the military.

My recruiter at Orion was up-front and honest about my strengths, as well as my weakness. He quickly responded to any questions or concerns I had. Orion understood the difficulty with transitioning and helped select interviews that matched my needs. And when I asked about other recruiting firms, they even suggested that I consult them, as well. The customer service I experienced was outstanding, which is why I focused my efforts with Orion.” - Anthony Tanner, Shift Supervisor

“I left the Navy late November 2012 and decided that I needed a break, so it was mid-December before I really started looking for jobs. In reality, I should have been on the ball looking for work a few days after I got out. I heard about Orion through some friends of mine, but was contacted by Mike Wooster, and that was how I came to really understand what Orion does. It's more than a recruiting agency. Orion really takes care of the applicants and are always looking out for what best suits you.

Dave Conner was also heavily involved in my hiring process. There were others, as well, who were very helpful and even tweaked my resume to make it look not only better but also only take up a page! Everyone I spoke to was engaging and helpful and always looking out for me to make sure I got the job that I wanted and would enjoy doing. Orion made my geographical restriction of New York City work and found me a job near where I live!

Orion was spectacular. Seeing as how they provide their job seeker services for free, that makes it an even sweeter deal! Orion kills the competition, and if given two offers that are the same, I will always go with the Orion side, because they have proven to be an invaluable resource. I am very happy with my new career!” - Brendon Neese, Equipment Service Technician

“My recruiter was Tony Hoffman. We had numerous conversations about job placement. He was always available to assist me and answer any questions I had. He definitely listened to my needs and was sensitive to the problems I had at the time. Orion played an active role in placing me in a career, and Tony gave me a chance where others would have given up.” - David Pattawi, Maintenance Mechanic

“Orion helped place me in my first civilian job, where I worked from 2007 to 2010. So, when it came time to find a new opportunity, I worked with them again. Matt Clingon was my recruiter each time with Orion. Working with Matt has been an excellent experience on both occasions. He is a true professional and has an almost supernatural ability to read candidates and match them to appropriate employers. Every interview he has ever placed me in resulted in a strong potential for an offer.

I was a Marine Corps Sergeant in Signals Intelligence and also an Electronics Technician Second Class in the Navy. The technical education and experience, as well as the customer service skills, that I gained across both services was instrumental in both jobs I obtained through Orion.

My new position with Kibart is that of a Commissioning Engineer. Commissioning Engineers specialize in ensuring that buildings are designed and constructed in a way that meets an owner’s needs and intentions. We ensure that building systems and controls function as designed, and we also recommend improvements and directly consult with the owner as to the status of the building project.

The connections between commissioning and military experience are strong and varied. I have to work with a broad range of people in a broad range of capacities, and must understand chains of command and proper communication protocols. I must lead and show initiative often, but I must always listen and meet the needs of the customer and my co-workers. Most veterans will have no problem recalling all these skills from their time in the service.” – Brent McElroy, Commissioning Engineer

“Eric Hinistroza was my recruiter, and he answered my questions about what to expect at a hiring conference while working to get me interviews for jobs that would bring me to Houston. The hiring conference was the most valuable part of the process, because it set me up to actually meet and talk to recruiting managers and allowed me to sell myself beyond a paper resume.

I landed a job as a Field Service Technician with National Oilwell Varco, and the technical skills that Navy taught me helped me get my foot into the door. Other parallels with being a tech in the Navy are the need to be accountable for your work and be able to work alone/in teams. However, this job requires a lot more responsibility, because of the independence I now have, and the requirement to represent the company well.

I would not have known much about NOV or this specific job and how well it related to work that I had already done while in the Navy if it weren’t for Orion. Conducting a job hunt is challenging, but going through the hiring conference with Orion was a game-changer in that I was able to interview with a hiring manager and get my foot in the door.” – James Dooley, Field Service Technician
