4 Steps to a Successful Interview

Most transitioning military personnel have never had to interview for a position. In the military, natural career progression and a demonstrated record of performance have dictated the particular jobs you have secured. Corporate America is different. In order to secure the position you are targeting, you must be able to convince an interviewer that your military experience and demonstrated track record of performance are a strong fit for their organization. The candidate who can best relate his or her background and strengths to an interviewer will be the one who gets the job.

In order to prepare for an interview, break it down into four parts and prepare for each section:

The First 5 Minutes - Introduction

Like the introduction to a paper, an introduction to an interview is critical. During the first five minutes, you will set the tone for your interview. Make a good first impression. Look sharp and present a professional image. Relax, smile, and remember your plan. Your resume got your foot in the door, now you must effectively show the interviewer why you are a fit for the position.

The Next 30 Minutes (The Body)

During the body of your interview, the interviewer will typically ask you a series of questions focusing on your qualifications, for approximately 20-30 minutes. Some questions are behavioral (looking for specific examples when you demonstrated a particular behavior), others may be company oriented to get a feel of how much you know about the position and industry. Your answers should highlight your qualifications, personality, and interest in the position you are interviewing for.

Wrapping it Up (The Conclusion)

You have just completed answering a series of questions focusing on your qualifications, and now it is time to wrap up the interview. At this point, the interviewer is going to give you the opportunity to ask some questions. You must ask questions. Questions equal interest in the minds of an interviewer, and are a critical component of your interview. Formulate three to five well-thought-out questions that show that you are prepared, demonstrate genuine interest in the position, and set you up for your close.

Closing the Interview

“The Close” is a term used to describe the process of gaining some form of commitment from the prospective customer. In this case, the interviewer is the customer. By paying attention and asking the appropriate questions, you should uncover the employer’s needs. The needs that you are able to satisfy, through the use of your talent, become potential benefits to the employer. Focus on those needs during your close.

Following a full day of intensive classroom instruction, participants will be able to get individualized support and mentoring throughout the year from experienced professionals.

The first class will be held on Saturday, January 25, from 9am – 5pm in downtown Washington, D.C. Additional classes will be offered throughout the year.

Anthony Dante, Customer Support Engineer

I got out of the Navy in April 2010 and started working with a company in Salem, OR. But they went out of business after a year, so I started going to school. It wasn’t until June or July of this year that I began my job search.

My recruiter was Jay Koranda. He is awesome! I gave him a call and was literally flying to job conferences within a week. Being without a job, air travel and hotel were graciously covered. It’s obvious Orion has been doing this for a while, because my new job is a great fit.

I am currently a Customer Service Engineer and was a Nuclear Electricians Mate 2nd Class. There are many parallels between my job in the military and my new one. The military was great looking back. I may not have always enjoyed the deployments, but I wouldn’t have the confidence I do now or the technical background if it wasn’t for the Navy. I also gained confidence in learning completely new concepts, which has helped me immensely in my present position. I am expected to be able to repair and complete PMs, follow procedure (still very important), and generally be able to pick of the aspects of the job as soon as possible. The Navy was very helpful in preparing me for this.

At the time I was feeling antsy, because I needed a job really badly, but looking back it was really fast, especially considering the technical level of the position. This job is amazing. It’s challenging, and the people here are great. I look forward to going to work in the morning and getting to learn something new. I can look to anyone here for help on anything. This place is a real team. And the pay is great, also.

I thought the Orion process was perfect. While it was a pretty busy day having seven or more interviews, it definitely put us out there and let us see what jobs were available. Salary: $18/hour, plus overtime (average of 10-20 hrs of overtime per week when traveling).

Location: You can live anywhere in the United States within a reasonable distance to an airport.

Requirements: This position is a traveling position and you must be able to travel up to 6 weeks at a time and work up to 50-60 hours per week if needed, to meet project and maintenance schedules. You will perform weekend operations and repair of wind turbine generators as needed. You need the ability to consistently climb wind turbine towers up to 300 feet in height, up to 3 times a day.


To perform the job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Familiarity with Direct Current Electricity, Alternating Current Electricity and Electronics.
  • Familiarity with Voltage Testers, Multimeters, Amp Clamps, Oscilloscopes, Meghommeters, Infrared Testers, Voltage Test Procedures, Lock Out Tag Out, Electric Static Discharge (ESD), Hydraulics, Accumulator Charging, Crane Hand Signals, Soldering, Fasteners, Torquing, Hytorques, Fiber Optics, First Aid. 
  • Must have clean DMV record and ability to operate service trucks as required. 
  • Ability to train other employees in operations, maintenance & repair procedures. 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
