CareerCast.com Releases 10 Jobs for Veterans in 2014

Civilian career paths for transitioning veterans are varied and do not necessarily correlate with your MOS. With so many options, it can be hard to choose a path. To help with this, CareerCast.com recently released its list of Best Jobs for Veterans 2014. The ten careers on the list represent everything from EMTs to Software Engineers and illustrate the breadth of skills veteran bring to the civilian workplace.

In an article in Forbes, Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast, tells author Susan Adams, “Most veterans are more qualified than they realize for well-paying jobs, ranging from training and development manager (average annual salary: $95,400) to construction project manager ($82,800). Veterans are often more qualified than civilians if they are matched with the right jobs.”

Among the higher paying jobs on the list is Industrial Production Manager, with an average salary of $89,900. It is no surprise that this career is on the list, as Industrial/Capital Equipment was one of the top 10 industries in which Orion candidates found careers in last quarter. Among the thousands of veterans in charge of production is Andrew Hamilton, a Marine Corps CH-46E pilot who is now a Production Supervisor with Owens Corning.

“My new position is Production Supervisor for Owens Corning, a Fortune 500 company. In the military, people looked to me to make decisions and ensure the job at hand was getting done in a safe and timely manner. I see my role at my new position facing those same types of situations,” explains Hamilton, “I received top notch mentoring and leadership training that gave me the skills and expertise I need to be successful as a Production Supervisor.”

Construction is also among the top 10 industries for Orion last quarter and is represented in CareerCast’s list by Construction Program Manager, with an average salary of $82,800. On Monday, February 10, First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez announced at the National Symposium: Veterans’ Employment in Construction that a coalition of construction employers and associations that have collectively pledged to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years.

Chris Canfield, a former Intelligence Officer in the Marine Corps, began his career with RQ Construction in 2008 as a Project Engineer working on a project for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) at Camp Pendleton. At the end of 2009, he was promoted to Assistant Project Manager. He credits this rapid promotion to his leadership, management, and communication experience gained in the military. “During that time, I also helped write various parts of our company’s proposals, mainly because I was able to understand what the lingo was and how it applied to our projects,” recalls Canfield.

When the MARSOC ended in the summer of 2010, Canfield was again promoted to Project Manager and asked to take over another project. Canfield explains, “To be promoted in three years to a position like Project Manager and run two concurrent projects showed how much trust and confidence RQ had in my abilities. Telecommunications Equipment Installer and Repairer also occupies a spot in the list, with an average salary of $54,500. In the military, veterans are charged with installing and maintaining the most sophisticated equipment in the world, and this training is invaluable in the civilian world. Eldon Pavelka has found this to be true in his career as a Data Center Technician for an online services provider. Pavelka tells us, “My particular background as a Nuclear Electricians Mate was a near perfect fit. My site manager is a prior sub ET Nuke who did six years active and about 20 years reserve. He was very down to earth with me when he told me that what I would be doing is similar to what I do on the ship, but with newer technology and for a different purpose.”

Industrial Engineering Technicians claim another spot on the list with an average salary of $50,900, however salaries in Industrial Engineering vary greatly depending on position, education, and level of experience. CareerCast states that many of the nation’s top energy companies have expressed the greatest interest to the Veteran's Administration in hiring returning veterans making this particular career a hot one. While not a technician, Paul Miranda has found this to be the case in his new career as an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer with ConocoPhillips.

“Coming from the military, I was limiting myself to jobs within the Defense/Aerospace industry, and Orion helped me branch out to different industries. Being an Electrical Engineer, I did not know how in demand my skills were in the Oil and Gas industry, so once I pursued jobs in that area, I was astonished at how much companies were competing to get me to accept their offers,” Miranda recalls. As Susan Adams points out, “four jobs on the list have ‘manager’ in the title since many veterans have worked supervising troops in the field or on the base. Many have also done legal work, software programming and emergency medical work. All of that experience translates into civilian jobs that can have median pay of more than $80,000 a year.”

Veterans & Spouses Praise their Experience at Inaugural Project Management Training in Washington, D.C.

Saturday, January 25, marked the inaugural Veteran and Military Spouse Project Management Training hosted by the Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services at Easter Seals, Orion International, McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and Efiia Cares. This intensive project management (PM) training and career transition program supports Veterans, Veteran Spouses, and Active Duty Spouses in obtaining high quality, high paying executive management positions.

Held in the offices of McDermott Will & Emery LLP in Washington, D.C., the class was attended by 30 students who came ready to learn the fundamentals of project management, industry standards, and best practices based on real projects. The students participated in classroom instruction, group exercises, presentations, resume writing, practice interviews, and training on management tools.

When asked their opinion of the course, every student agreed that the course will help them in their current job or job search. Additionally, 100% of the students said they would recommend the course. Among the feedback received on the course was:

I left as a Captain in the Army. The Army taught me hard work, leadership, organization, teamwork, accountability, and how to solve problems. All of these skills are transferable skills that companies look for in a candidate. Even if you aren't going into a leadership role (and I didn't), companies still like to see leadership experiences in candidates because it means they have the potential to grow.

Tim Duba was my main contact at Orion. I credit him with my smooth transition out of the Army and into a good career. Not only did he listen to what I wanted, but he took a chance on me since I was location bound to a specific city due to family reasons. He never tried to show me jobs outside of my city and only showed me jobs that I was interested in (sales). Tim fought to find opportunities for me within my city and always kept me in the loop on what was happening both at the companies I was interviewing with and what was happening within Orion. Without Tim's dedication, I would have had a much rockier transition, and most likely still have been looking for a job.

I went both to hiring conferences and direct placement interviews with Orion. I would highly recommend hiring conferences because, not only do you get to interview with a number of different companies, but you receive briefings on the companies (which helps you with the interview and deciding if the company/job is a good fit). Also, you can practice your interview skills. Both aspects contribute greatly to your success on the actual interview day. The direct placement interviews work well for opportunities outside of hiring conference windows, and you receive a briefing from Orion about the position and company.

I am now an Account Manager (salesman) for Hilti North America. Planning is huge as a salesman, as you plan out your day, week, month, and you are accountable for your success (or failure). This means waking up every day and working hard, something that anybody in the military will have mastered. Also, my job in sales means I need to influence people; and, being a leader in the military, I had to influence people, from my subordinates to my peers to my commander. The only difference here is that the influencing is more subtle, but the same principle applies.

Orion not only met my needs but exceeded my expectations of what a career placement company would do for me. They understood what I wanted for a career, how I was geographically bound, and found amazing opportunities for me. They were in constant contact with me, kept me informed of all opportunities, and helped me develop my interviewing skills.

Orion cared about me, invested time in me, and looked out for my interests. I cannot say this about any other company that I worked with. The other companies basically kept me on file and would send out an email if something happened to line up. Even then it was last minute and rushed, with little time to prepare and little to no information about the company and position I would interview for. Program Overview

  • The program is 18 months in duration. In the first 4-6 months of the program, you will learn the foundational concepts of Spine and Biologics Sales, gain exposure to business functions, assist with sales and surgeon training labs, and provide other sales support.
  • In Phase 2, approximately 12-14 months, you will spend time in the field with a mentor/trainer, interact with customers, and learning, observing and performing the day-to-day activities of a Commissioned Spine Representative. At the end of the program you will be eligible for opportunities as a Commissioned Spine Representative.
  • The program begins in mid-March 2014 in Memphis, TN.

Salary and Benefits

  • The base salary of a Sales Education Representative is $70,000, plus between $5,000 - $20,000 in bonuses. 
  • Once you become a Spine Representative, you can expect a salary of approximately $150K in your first year, with rapid growth. It is not uncommon to make $300K+ in your 2nd year as a Spine Representative. 
  • You will receive a comprehensive benefit plan including medical, dental, vision and life insurance; pension plan and 401(k); short term disability; discounted stock purchase plan; tuition reimbursement, and more.

Position Requirements

  • Top transitioning or recently transitioned Junior Military Officer
  • Bachelors degree in technical, science, or engineering field

  • Technical aptitude is important because you will be learning very complex procedures and pieces of equipment
  • Top notch communication skills and be able to communicate and instruct effectively 
  • Strong work ethic and organization and prioritization skills
  • Willingness to travel. In Phase I of the training program you will travel 50%, and in Phase II you will travel 90%. You will not be required to relocate throughout the training program, but will likely need to relocate when you get your first territory after completing the program. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must be able to begin training in mid-March in Memphis, TN.

Sales Engineering Training Program with Trane

Orion is currently recruiting veterans with an interest in a career in sales for a Sales Engineering Training Program with Trane, a division of Ingersoll Rand that provides heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and services that enhance the performance of buildings around the globe.

The Trane Graduate Training Program – Sales Engineering (GTP) is a five-month program designed to prepare engineers for a rewarding career in technical sales. The program is geared toward developing Sales Engineers to sell Trane's complex heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) products and systems to commercial and industrial customers. Upon completion of the Graduate Training Program, you will assume responsibilities of a Sales Engineer within a defined territory.

Training for the Graduate Training Program is located in La Crosse, WI, for five months. You must be willing to relocate to La Crosse, WI during the duration of the training program. Upon completion of the program, Trane has a number of openings across the country.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering is preferred
  • Possess solid teamwork skills and demonstrate confidence in presentation and written communication skills
  • Must be goal oriented and internally motivated to represent industry leading products in the market place
  • Possess a strong desire to sell
  • Must be eligible for employment in the United States without sponsorship
  • Must hold a valid state issued Driver’s License and provide proof of insurance
  • Must meet background check requirement
