The Hunter for Military Officers - March 2014

Saturday, March 1, 2014 Releases 10 Jobs for Veterans in 2014

Civilian career paths for transitioning veterans are varied and do not necessarily correlate with your MOS. With so many options, it can be hard to choose a path. To help with this, recently released its list of Best Jobs for Veterans 2014. The ten careers on the list represent everything from EMTs to Software Engineers and illustrate the breadth of skills veteran bring to the civilian workplace.

In an article in Forbes, Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast, tells author Susan Adams, “Most veterans are more qualified than they realize for well-paying jobs, ranging from training and development manager (average annual salary: $95,400) to construction project manager ($82,800). Veterans are often more qualified than civilians if they are matched with the right jobs.”

Among the higher paying jobs on the list is Industrial Production Manager, with an average salary of $89,900. It is no surprise that this career is on the list, as Industrial/Capital Equipment was one of the top 10 industries in which Orion candidates found careers in last quarter. Among the thousands of veterans in charge of production is Andrew Hamilton, a Marine Corps CH-46E pilot who is now a Production Supervisor with Owens Corning.

“My new position is Production Supervisor for Owens Corning, a Fortune 500 company. In the military, people looked to me to make decisions and ensure the job at hand was getting done in a safe and timely manner. I see my role at my new position facing those same types of situations,” explains Hamilton, “I received top notch mentoring and leadership training that gave me the skills and expertise I need to be successful as a Production Supervisor.”

Construction is also among the top 10 industries for Orion last quarter and is represented in CareerCast’s list by Construction Program Manager, with an average salary of $82,800. On Monday, February 10, First Lady Michelle Obama and U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez announced at the National Symposium: Veterans’ Employment in Construction that a coalition of construction employers and associations that have collectively pledged to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years.

Chris Canfield, a former Intelligence Officer in the Marine Corps, began his career with RQ Construction in 2008 as a Project Engineer working on a project for Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC) at Camp Pendleton. At the end of 2009, he was promoted to Assistant Project Manager. He credits this rapid promotion to his leadership, management, and communication experience gained in the military. “During that time, I also helped write various parts of our company’s proposals, mainly because I was able to understand what the lingo was and how it applied to our projects,” recalls Canfield.

When the MARSOC ended in the summer of 2010, Canfield was again promoted to Project Manager and asked to take over another project. Canfield explains, “To be promoted in three years to a position like Project Manager and run two concurrent projects showed how much trust and confidence RQ had in my abilities. I attribute it to the competencies and values I learned while I was serving.” Want to know more about Canfield’s transition? Click here.

Telecommunications Equipment Installer and Repairer also occupies a spot in the list, with an average salary of $54,500. In the military, veterans are charged with installing and maintaining the most sophisticated equipment in the world, and this training is invaluable in the civilian world. Eldon Pavelka has found this to be true in his career as a Data Center Technician for an online services provider. Pavelka tells us, “My particular background as a Nuclear Electricians Mate was a near perfect fit. My site manager is a prior sub ET Nuke who did six years active and about 20 years reserve. He was very down to earth with me when he told me that what I would be doing is similar to what I do on the ship, but with newer technology and for a different purpose.”

Industrial Engineering Technicians claim another spot on the list with an average salary of $50,900, however salaries in Industrial Engineering vary greatly depending on position, education, and level of experience. CareerCast states that many of the nation’s top energy companies have expressed the greatest interest to the Veteran's Administration in hiring returning veterans making this particular career a hot one. While not a technician, Paul Miranda has found this to be the case in his new career as an Instrumentation and Controls Engineer with ConocoPhillips.

“Coming from the military, I was limiting myself to jobs within the Defense/Aerospace industry, and Orion helped me branch out to different industries. Being an Electrical Engineer, I did not know how in demand my skills were in the Oil and Gas industry, so once I pursued jobs in that area, I was astonished at how much companies were competing to get me to accept their offers,” Miranda recalls. Learn more about careers with ConocoPhillips here.

Also on the list were:

  • Heavy & Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver
    • Average salary: $38,200
  • Emergency Medical Technician
    • Average salary: $31,000
  • Paralegal
    • Average salary: $47,000
  • Software Engineer
    • Average salary: $85,400
  • Training and Development Manager
    • Average salary: $95,400
  • Administrative Services Manager
    • Average salary: $81,100

As Susan Adams points out, “four jobs on the list have ‘manager’ in the title since many veterans have worked supervising troops in the field or on the base. Many have also done legal work, software programming and emergency medical work. All of that experience translates into civilian jobs that can have median pay of more than $80,000 a year.”

Veterans & Spouses Praise their Experience at Inaugural Project Management Training in Washington, D.C.

Saturday, January 25, marked the inaugural Veteran and Military Spouse Project Management Training hosted by the Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Community Services at Easter Seals, Orion International, McDermott Will & Emery LLP, and Efiia Cares. This intensive project management (PM) training and career transition program supports Veterans, Veteran Spouses, and Active Duty Spouses in obtaining high quality, high paying executive management positions.

Held in the offices of McDermott Will & Emery LLP in Washington, D.C., the class was attended by 30 students who came ready to learn the fundamentals of project management, industry standards, and best practices based on real projects. The students participated in classroom instruction, group exercises, presentations, resume writing, practice interviews, and training on management tools.

When asked their opinion of the course, every student agreed that the course will help them in their current job or job search. Additionally, 100% of the students said they would recommend the course. Among the feedback received on the course was:

  • "A class of this caliber is not something that I would have guessed would be free. It was an awesome class."
  • "Thank you for volunteering your time. Excellent service to our veteran community. It is appreciated."
  • "Yesterday's veterans PM training was amazing. Thank you!"
  • "Great overview of civilian management terms. I knew some of the project management concepts, but now I’m going to change some of the language on my resume."
  • "It’s pretty awesome. Thank you so much for operating the course free to veterans."

The next class will be held in March 2014 and is targeted to participants with little or no project management experience. For more information about this program complete this form to request registration information when it is available. If you have questions, please email Kelly O'Connor.

Job Seeker Success Story

Erick Gustafson, Account Manager

Santa Clara University, 2009

I left as a Captain in the Army. The Army taught me hard work, leadership, organization, teamwork, accountability, and how to solve problems. All of these skills are transferable skills that companies look for in a candidate. Even if you aren't going into a leadership role (and I didn't), companies still like to see leadership experiences in candidates because it means they have the potential to grow.

Tim Duba was my main contact at Orion. I credit him with my smooth transition out of the Army and into a good career. Not only did he listen to what I wanted, but he took a chance on me since I was location bound to a specific city due to family reasons. He never tried to show me jobs outside of my city and only showed me jobs that I was interested in (sales). Tim fought to find opportunities for me within my city and always kept me in the loop on what was happening both at the companies I was interviewing with and what was happening within Orion. Without Tim's dedication, I would have had a much rockier transition, and most likely still have been looking for a job.

I went both to hiring conferences and direct placement interviews with Orion. I would highly recommend hiring conferences because, not only do you get to interview with a number of different companies, but you receive briefings on the companies (which helps you with the interview and deciding if the company/job is a good fit). Also, you can practice your interview skills. Both aspects contribute greatly to your success on the actual interview day. The direct placement interviews work well for opportunities outside of hiring conference windows, and you receive a briefing from Orion about the position and company.

I am now an Account Manager (salesman) for Hilti North America. Planning is huge as a salesman, as you plan out your day, week, month, and you are accountable for your success (or failure). This means waking up every day and working hard, something that anybody in the military will have mastered. Also, my job in sales means I need to influence people; and, being a leader in the military, I had to influence people, from my subordinates to my peers to my commander. The only difference here is that the influencing is more subtle, but the same principle applies.

Orion not only met my needs but exceeded my expectations of what a career placement company would do for me. They understood what I wanted for a career, how I was geographically bound, and found amazing opportunities for me. They were in constant contact with me, kept me informed of all opportunities, and helped me develop my interviewing skills.

Orion cared about me, invested time in me, and looked out for my interests. I cannot say this about any other company that I worked with. The other companies basically kept me on file and would send out an email if something happened to line up. Even then it was last minute and rushed, with little time to prepare and little to no information about the company and position I would interview for. Orion prepares you for success by investing time in you, listening to you, and working with you. They are by far the best career placement company.

According to your Peers

“Working with Orion International was a positive experience for me and an absolute pleasure. I had been working with several other recruiting agencies prior to linking up with Orion, with little to no success in finding opportunities that fit the career goals I had for myself. My recruiter, Todd Phillips, put me in the seat across from some excellent companies that, otherwise, I would never have had the opportunity to interview for.

He was both attentive and informative, providing feedback that helped me be successful throughout the interview process. He worked with me every step of the way and really listened to what I was looking for, working to find the perfect position to match both my personal and professional goals.

I recently relocated to the east coast to start my new job in the machining and engineering industry, something I never thought at this point would be possible. I am very grateful to Orion and its recruiting team, especially Todd, for their efforts and enthusiastic support of military veteran officers in achieving a successful career transition into the civilian work force.” - Angie Cunningham, Maintenance & Facilities Manager

“Contacting Orion International was the best decision I made while planning my transition out of the Army. From day one, Orion worked with me, even while living abroad, and converted my resume and ambitions into potential careers. Todd Phillips recommended that I attend the Distinguished Candidate Conference in Chicago and supplied me with online tools, such as interview preparation, which led to success in Chicago.

After the conference, I was contacted by a myriad of top-notch employers that wanted to move forward. Orion account representatives were extremely proactive and facilitated smooth communication with each employer during the process. In the end, I had the opportunity to choose between more than one offer.

I highly endorse Todd and the Orion International team to all Military Officers transitioning into a new career. Their dedication, hard work, and organization made my transition seamless.” - Benjamin Urena, Operations Management Development Program

“Quick, efficient, and professional, Orion has helped me attain the goal of finding great career opportunities in my desired geographic location. They were constantly focused on what was the right fit for me. They know that finding the perfect fit means both happier candidates and also happy employers.” – Brian Darracott, Production Supervisor

“My recruiter was Todd Phillips. He was very professional and helpful. Todd took a lot of time and put in a great amount of effort to find the right career for me by using my background and finding the perfect fit.

I currently hold a Production Supervisor role and will be moving into a Logistics Supervisor position soon. My job in the Army has helped me tremendously in my current position by taking people’s different skillsets and personalities and getting a task or project completed. Because of my military experience, I’ve been able to find solutions to get people to work together in a timely and orderly fashion.” – Chatlin Magee, Production Supervisor

“Not only did Orion prepare me to succeed by prepping me for my interviews, they took the time to collect my input, so that they put me in front of the companies that I was most interested in, not just the ones with the most urgent needs to fill.

Regardless of whether you are transitioning out of the military or if you are a veteran already in the civilian sector looking for a new opportunity, Orion presents candidates with a unique experience that prepares and places individuals with reputable companies that not only recognize your contributions, but seek to further develop your talents.” – Dwight Blackledge, Global Information Systems Project Manager

“I went through a very simple and streamlined process with Orion. After initial contact with Jim Freeze, I began working with Mike Wood. Mike planned for me to attend a hiring conference, but, due to my location restrictions, I did not attend. Shortly thereafter, Mike set up an interview with Siemens. I did the interview, as well as the follow up interview, and accepted Siemens offer later the next week. I interviewed with one company, and it was a fit. This crushed my expectations, and I attribute this experience to the Orion team for coaching, directing, and understanding me.

When I began working with Orion, Jim not only asked me what I wanted but also informed me of other options I previously had not considered. My initial resistance to ‘sales’ was short-sighted, and Jim was able to explain the ins and outs of sales in a way that opened my eyes. I see parallels to my military career every day. The process of targeting a local National for information collection or influence in a combat zone is very similar to targeting a customer. You MUST understand them. This includes their background and sources of motivation. The end result is very different but the process is very similar.

Orion met my career needs without a doubt. And I enjoyed the flexibility of a no-contract relationship. I wanted the flexibility to search on my own and Orion provided that.” - Jacob Snyder, Sales Executive

“Orion's team was absolutely incredible! They were persistent, professional, incredibly helpful, and were able to provide accurate and documented information. They weren't overbearing, ensured I was kept up to speed on every aspect of the process, and made sure I got what I wanted while not trying to force me into something I didn't want. Mike Wood treated me exceptionally well and assisted me better than I could have expected!” - James Poore, ISC Supervisor

“I have nothing but good things to say about my recruiter Chris Hurst. He was able to match me with my top pick and was receptive to feedback throughout the process. Orion had better positions available, did a better job of pairing me with positions I was competitive for, and presented a more professional and organized face than other recruiting firms I used.” – Kevin Nims, Team Leader

“The best part of my experience with Orion was that they introduced me to companies that I didn’t know about and got me interviews for positions in an industry that I hadn’t had luck getting into on my own. Those interviews led to two job offers and my new career.” – Matthew Sopp, Performance Improvement Coordinator

“Working with Orion was a fantastic experience. From the very first phone call I had with my recruiter, Todd Phillips, I felt that they were genuinely interested in my job search process and my future career. Todd did an excellent job of taking my military background, education, and experiences and matching them with potential companies and positions.

Not only did Orion help me hone interviewing skills, but they gave me the opportunity to sit face-to-face with almost 20 companies, all of which I was highly interested in pursuing. Even after getting a second interview, Orion was with me every step of the way to help ensure that I accepted my new position under my terms and that it was the right fit for me. Orion gave me not only the knowledge and tools I needed to get my next job after the military, but helped open the door to my ideal future career.” - Nathan Carpenter, Account Manager

“I signed up with Orion International through the advice of a former coworker. I was not sure what to expect or how quickly I would be contacted. I was pleasantly surprised by the attentiveness of my recruiter, Todd Philips, and the efficiency of the hiring conferences.

I started my career search with Orion in October 2013. During my search, I attended two hiring conferences, phone interviews, video interviews, and second interviews. During these experiences, the Orion team was there to answer questions and get follow up feedback to me within 24 hours.

I was fortunate to be offered two great career opportunities within three months of my career search with Orion. The personal attention and insight was vital in my decision-making. I look forward to the start of my new career thanks to the assistance of Todd and the Orion team. I would recommend Orion to any military professional interested in a solid career with personal attention and numerous opportunities.” - Stephanie Sandoval, Maintenance Supervisor

“Todd Phillips was my recruiter, and he took special care to analyze my background and experience to pair me off with several opportunities that I felt were excellent matches. After being invited to the Chicago conference, I interviewed with four companies, all of which I would have been happy to work for. I received interest from two, and had a number of follow up interviews with Stryker for two different positions in different departments that ended up competing over me.

I was an Air Force Captain. I flew B-1B bombers as a back-seater, which doesn't prepare you for much else, but the many additional duties you have as an officer allow you to build a breadth of experience. I am now an IT project manager. I ensure projects to develop functional software stay on time, on budget and deliver the requested results. It was a lot like being a training officer in the Air Force where I was responsible for ensuring everyone got the training they needed to deploy without busting out annual budget. However, it must be said, I had built some private sector experience in the industry as well

Orion was proactive, encouraging and helpful. They provided advice and interview training. I'd recommend Orion for anyone transitioning from the military, or to any veteran who is changing jobs and wants a better way to find the right career without hoping to be that one resume in five-hundred that gets picked on a job board for an interview.

I would not be where I am today without Orion. Few people enjoy the advantage of being able to interview one-on-one with recruiters from many top companies in one day, and Orion made that possible for me. Through the hiring conference, I was able to find a terrific job in a place I'm excited to live. I'd recommend Orion to any veteran seeking to transition into the private sector. They will help you get where you want to go." – Kevin Rogers, Project Manager

“I sincerely appreciate the time and attention the folks at Orion International provided. From day one, the process was simple and straightforward. No gimmicks, no promises, no false expectations; only candid advice and great dose of reality. Todd Phillips and crew were in frequent contact with me regarding the status of my job search until the perfect opportunity was dropped into my lap.

Just like that, in less than two months I secured a great position with excellent compensation. Orion was my first choice for job searching following my retirement from the U.S. Navy, and it should be yours too!” - Deron Krietemeyer, Project Manager

“I was treated very well by Mike Wood. I felt that he really cared about finding me a job and also took the time to get to know me. In all, Orion was much more approachable than the competition. They took the time to communicate to you as much as they could.” – Joshua Keller, Production Supervisor

“Orion was there every step of the way of my career search, from pre-hiring conference preparation through offer and acceptance.  Both Jim Freeze and Todd Phillips helped me focus my efforts and pay attention to preparation. Overall, the Orion team was consistent, helpful, and enthusiastic.” – Keith Hickman, Quality and Continuous Improvement Manager
