Naval Academy Graduates: Find Civilian Careers through Orion's Free Career Placement Services

Over the years, Orion has helped nearly 400 United States Naval Academy graduates find post-military careers. This track record of success, combined with the experience of many Orion employees who are USNA alumni, gives Orion an edge when it comes to finding the right career for these specially trained Naval and USMC Officers. We are proud of the high-caliber opportunities we have available for Naval Academy Graduates.

Our free services to USNA graduates include resume preparation, transition advice and assistance, interview preparation, and arrangement of interviews for positions that are a match with your background, qualifications, and desires.  As a graduate of the US Naval Academy and an experienced Military Officer, you have many traits that are sought out in the civilian workforce and experience unmatched by your civilian peers, and we’re here to match you with the most dominant list of corporate clients in the industry.

There are multiple ways in which USNA graduates can work with Orion to find a civilian career:

  • Orion's Military Officer Transition Program is a thorough educational program designed to put your preparation 'to do list' in a logical sequence of events to be completed in the months leading up to your transition. The program is comprised of a series of informative webinars, self-paced instruction, interview preparation, and individual calls with your recruiter.
  • Our Distinguished Candidate Conferences are designed to present high growth careers for our top transitioning Officers, and feature Operations Management, Engineering, Leadership Development and Sales roles throughout the nation. Additionally we hold frequent hiring events onsite at our clients' facilities which feature campus tours, meet and greet opportunities, multiple stages of the interview process in a single day, and unmatched insight into the culture and work environment of the company.
  • We also offer the Orion First Partnership Program for outstanding Active Duty Officers who have distinguished themselves from their peers and fellow graduates. This program is your opportunity for unmatched preparation and assistance, as well as early and maximum exposure to our best client companies.
Mark Belanger, a 2007 USNA graduate and District Sales Representative with Nalco, describes his experience working with Orion, and, in particular Orion Recruiter Tim Duba (USNA ’03), “Tim treated me with respect and truly understood what I wanted and needed in a new career.  He always took the time to talk, and returned every single one of my phone calls in a timely manner. The companies he paired me with were spot on, and, as a result, I was able to secure two job offers from the Distinguished Candidate Conference."

Belanger was impressed by the personal service he received from his fellow alumnus: “Tim’s most impressive aspect is his sincerity.  I understood that he is a recruiter, and it is his job to match candidates with positions.  However, I knew that Tim sincerely cared that I made the right choice for me and my family.  Working with Tim was like working with a friend – but always in a professional manner.  I have worked with several other recruiters, and Tim is, without a doubt, the best.”

Patrick Brandon is a 2004 Naval Academy graduate who found that while his military training didn’t directly translate into his new career, it did give him the ability to learn a whole new industry. “As a Technical Support Engineer for a semiconductor test equipment manufacturer, I feel very well-prepared.   I was a former Lieutenant in the Navy with Surface Warfare (nuclear) training and had no experience in the semiconductor industry, but was hired with the assumption that I could be easily trained and would be largely self-directed,” explains Brandon, who has now been with his employer for nearly two years.

If so, you may be a candidate for Orion’s National Distinguished Candidate Conference (DCC) in Baltimore, MD, on September 8 & 9, 2014. There will be positions available nationwide, with a focus on Engineering, Sales, Leadership Development, and Operations Management. Orion carefully selects candidates for our DCCs that exemplify the best Orion has to offer our client companies. We work hard to assemble a select group of the top JMOs from around the country.

Our distinguished candidates include:

• Graduates of Military Service Academies or Top Universities with a minimum GPA of 3.0;
• Those with a masters degree or other advanced education; and
• Those that have consistently ranked above their peers in Officer Evaluations.

Additionally, you should be available to start working within the next four months and be geographically flexible.

Shane Serafin, a former Navy Lieutenant and USNA graduate who found his career through a recent Orion DCC, explains why he feels the event was such a success: “An Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference is something that you don't want to miss. It is a golden opportunity to meet with several prospective employers all at once, all of them very high quality. And Orion prepares you well. I particularly liked the interview prep session during this conference. It helped me to tweak a few of my responses in a manner that paid major dividends during the interviews!

What do other candidates have to say about the caliber of our DCCs? Read on...

"Working with Orion International and attending their Distinguished Candidate Conference in Chicago was truly a great experience. When asked how the event could have been better, I honestly did not have an answer, because it was top notch all the way! Everything from the preparation to the event itself was nothing short of extraordinary. I highly recommend Orion to any JMO that is transitioning out of the military; they most certainly will not regret it!"

“I participated in two DCCs with Orion and interviewed with about 15 companies—pretty darn amazing for two days out of my life!”

“The Distinguished Candidate Conference I attended in Dallas was an excellent opportunity to interview with the people who would eventually be my managers. I got to do five interviews in one day!"

“When I turned to Orion, I realized that their reputation stands tall amongst the corporate sector.  It was evident from the multiple high caliber companies that came to the Distinguished Candidate Conferences I attended in Baltimore and Chicago.  I hope that other quality officers will see the benefits of working with a stellar placement firm like Orion.”

Orion only holds a few DCCs each year. Our next DCC will be held October 13 & 14 in San Diego, CA. If you would like to be considered for one of the upcoming Orion DCCs, please click here.

According to Your Peers

“I loved working with all of the Orion team, specifically Mike Wood, Brett Watson, and Scott McNary.  Everyone seemed to really care about me and my needs (and quell some of my fears about transition and job hunting).

Thanks to Orion, I am now the Driveline Production Supervisor at Meritor's Laurinburg, NC plant. Leading people and operational planning are the most easily translated skills. While the conditions certainly differ from my time as a Captain in Psychological Operations, the basics tenants of leadership and planning will always apply.

Orion unequivocally met my needs. I felt less pressured by Orion than I did by any other JMO recruiter. The feeling that I got from the entire team is that they under-promised and over-delivered throughout the entire process.  I have and will continue to recommend using Orion to all of my friends that are thinking about a transition out of service.” - Jim Taft, Production Supervisor, Meritor

“Orion met and exceeded my needs and expectations. They are a great team, from the recruiters to account executives to leadership. I never felt pressured or rushed into any decisions and was guided through an unfamiliar process.” – Patrick Wendling, Inside Sales Executive, Siemens

“Orion gave me opportunities that I never would have even considered possible before. They gave me all the tools I needed to find a great job that harnessed my skill set and captured my interests. The fact that Orion has close relationships with the companies it hosts at the hiring conferences, and that resumes are pre-screened through the Account Executives for those companies is a big plus. When I went into those conference interviews, I knew that I had already sparked the interviewer's interest before I even walked through the door.

Orion was head and shoulders above the competition. They helped me get my foot in the door, negotiated a great starting salary for me, and followed through to ensure I got a job I was qualified for and that I would enjoy. I'd recommend Orion to anyone transitioning out of the military in a heartbeat. Orion is an absolute godsend for veterans looking to work in the private sector. You guys rock!” – Brandt Dixon, Sales Representative, Schneider Electric
