Children of Fallen Patriots Scholarship Recipient Jacob Healy Speaks at Orion International Hiring Conference

Jacob Healy, a scholarship recipient and now Programs Analyst for the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, spoke at Orion's Hiring Conference in Jacksonville, FL, on July 14 about the loss of his father during a special operations mission. He also spoke about the opportunities that organizations like the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation, which provides college scholarships and long-term educational counseling to children of those who have lost their lives in military service, have given him.

Jacob is the Gold Star son of Senior Chief Navy SEAL Daniel Richard Healy, who died on June 28, 2005, when his helicopter was shot down during a rescue attempt in the Kunar Province of the Hindu Kush Mountains. Eleven Navy SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers were lost that day, making it the largest loss of special operations personnel since WWII. Only Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class SEAL Marcus Luttrell would survive. Known as Operation Red Wings, the story has since been told in the book and film Lone Survivor.

He recounted his father’s 13 years of SEAL service, which took him all over the U.S. and to many places overseas, from training in Virginia with SEAL Team 10 to studying Russian at the Defense Language Institute in California and time in Russia.

Jacob went on to speak about how losing his father meant losing his hero, with all of the support, encouragement, and ambition that his father gave gone with his death. With his loss, the biggest trial that Jacob faced was discovering his identity.

Jacob credited the grace and support of organizations like the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation for giving him a hope for the future. With their support, he has been able to graduate with a BA in Architecture from the University of San Diego and now has been able to help and serve other Gold Star families as a Programs Analyst of the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation. He concluded his speech with excitement about making a difference in the lives of others through the foundation.

Jacob will be accompanying the Orion team on the final event of the Veteran Low to High Challenge, hiking from the lowest point in Death Valley to the summit of Mount Whitney, which will take place over 7 days and cover 130+ miles.

If you would like to help others like Jacob, please consider a tax-deductible donation sponsorship, which will support the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation and our other partner Veteran organizations, Operation Military Embrace and Warrior Hike, or participate in a 5K Run / Walk Race.

It is our goal to raise $100K+ for our partner Veterans Organizations through the Veteran Low to High Challenge and through 5K Run / Walk Races in each of the cities in which we have an Orion office – Austin, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Raleigh, NC; Virginia Beach, VA; and San Diego, CA.

National Distinguished Candidate Conference - September 8 & 9 in Baltimore, MD

Are you preparing to exit the military and begin a civilian career? Do you think that your education, background, and military career distinguish you from your peers?

If so, you may be a candidate for Orion’s National Distinguished Candidate Conference (DCC) in Baltimore, MD, on September 8 & 9, 2014. There will be positions available nationwide, with a focus on Engineering, Sales, Leadership Development, and Operations Management. Orion carefully selects candidates for our DCCs that exemplify the best Orion has to offer our client companies. We work hard to assemble a select group of the top JMOs from around the country.

Our distinguished candidates include:

• Graduates of Military Service Academies or Top Universities with a minimum GPA of 3.0;
• Those with a masters degree or other advanced education; and
• Those that have consistently ranked above their peers in Officer Evaluations.

Additionally, you should be available to start working within the next four months and be geographically flexible.

Shane Serafin, a former Navy Lieutenant and USNA graduate who found his career through a recent Orion DCC, explains why he feels the event was such a success: “An Orion Distinguished Candidate Conference is something that you don't want to miss. It is a golden opportunity to meet with several prospective employers all at once, all of them very high quality. And Orion prepares you well. I particularly liked the interview prep session during this conference. It helped me to tweak a few of my responses in a manner that paid major dividends during the interviews!

What do other candidates have to say about the caliber of our DCCs? Read on...

"Working with Orion International and attending their Distinguished Candidate Conference in Chicago was truly a great experience. When asked how the event could have been better, I honestly did not have an answer, because it was top notch all the way! Everything from the preparation to the event itself was nothing short of extraordinary. I highly recommend Orion to any JMO that is transitioning out of the military; they most certainly will not regret it!"

“I participated in two DCCs with Orion and interviewed with about 15 companies—pretty darn amazing for two days out of my life!”

“The Distinguished Candidate Conference I attended in Dallas was an excellent opportunity to interview with the people who would eventually be my managers. I got to do five interviews in one day!"

“When I turned to Orion, I realized that their reputation stands tall amongst the corporate sector.  It was evident from the multiple high caliber companies that came to the Distinguished Candidate Conferences I attended in Baltimore and Chicago.  I hope that other quality officers will see the benefits of working with a stellar placement firm like Orion.”

Orion only holds a few DCCs each year. Our next DCC will be held October 13 & 14 in San Diego, CA. If you would like to be considered for one of the upcoming Orion DCCs, please click here.

According to Your Peers

“I worked with three recruiting companies, and what made Orion stand out was the focus on placement and aggressive timeline. I had been working with the other two companies for about a month or two before making contact with Orion, and Orion was still the first to send me to a conference and put me in front of interviewers. Whenever my friends ask about my job search I recommend Orion to them because of that laser focus on helping me find the right opportunity.” – Michael Quashne, Senior Project Manager, PPL Electric Utilities

“I am really happy with the work that was put into my job search by Orion. Orion treated me with respect and really worked hard to find me a job that can only be described as an ‘opportunity of a lifetime.’ I will highly recommend Orion to anyone in the military who wants to make the transition to civilian life as painless as possible.” – Scott Gunderson, Global Aerospace / Defense Marketing Manager, Parker Hannifin

“I worked with two competitor companies, and they weren't able to find me a single interview over several months. Orion was able to find 13 great positions with companies I would love to work with, and was offered a great position out of the Houston hiring conference. I would recommend Orion over the competition anytime!” – Scott Matheina, Plant Manager, Matheson Tri-Gas
