The culminating event of the Veteran Low to High Challenge will occur in October, when our team of Orion Employees, Veterans, Partners, and Corporate Sponsors, will hike from the lowest point in Death Valley to the summit of Mount Whitney, a trek which will span 7 days and 130+ miles. It is our goal to gain national recognition for our Partner Organizations and raise $100K+ by undertaking and completing the Low to High Challenge.

Go The Extra Mile For The Vets 5K Cincinnati Office Race

The Cincinnati office's Go The Extra Mile For The Vets 5K race for the Veteran Low to High Challenge was held on Saturday, September 6th with tremendous success! Even with the threat of rain, 209 runners showed up for the event. The office is projecting a total of $13,498 for charity, with an extra $1000 from a private donation, bringing the total up to $14,498. The office will likely hit 145 percent of their fundraising goal once things are finalized, a phenomenal feat!

 

After the race, Orion Recruiter Todd Phillips had the honor to meet Jesse Bier, a USMC Combat Veteran who was suffering from PTSD and was helped by one of our Veteran non-profit charities, Warrior Hike. He attributes his ability to get his life back in order to his experience hiking the Appalachian Trail with Warrior Hike. He now works with an organization called Battle Buddies, helping to connect Veterans with PTSD with guide dogs. Jesse will be leading a hike for Warrior Hike next year. Jesse's story is a great, personal reminder of why Orion launched the Low to High Challenge to help Veterans through our partner non-profit Veteran organizations.

5K Warrior Run Austin Office Race

Orion’s second 5K race of the season for the Veteran Low to High Challenge was held on Saturday, September 13th in Austin, TX. The Austin Office’s Veteran Low to High Challenge – 5K Warrior Run had some struggles to contend with, including a weather report of light rain, high winds, and temperatures in the 60’s, and a very saturated market in terms of races, but was still able to pull off a fantastic event.

The office kept a positive attitude and pulled together as a team to raise $3,583.62 for our partner non-profit Veteran organizations, with more donations coming in this week! In all, 178 runners registered for the event!

Some highlights include the Kids K race, which was a fun event for all participants and spectators, organized race teams from sponsors Freescale Semiconductor and Bench Tree, and the recognition of SGT Villarreal, a reminder of why Orion has contributed so much effort to launch the Veteran Low to High Challenge and raise funds for our partner non-profit Veteran organizations.

Perhaps one of the best parts of the race was Orion’s own Emily Castro, who won the 5K overall and absolutely blew everyone out of the water with a time of 19 minutes! Way to go, Emily!

GI Jobs Article on Operations Management Features Orion Alumnus at Polaris

A June 2014 article in GI Jobs by Sarah Hodon focuses on Operations Manager careers and why they are such an excellent transition for veterans. Careers in Operations Management span all industries and ensure that the company "keep[s] their businesses running, with the right people doing the right jobs with the right equipment while delivering their products or services on time and at the right price."

Polaris, maker of off-road vehicles, including ATVs, motorcycles, and snowmobiles, is among the companies leveraging veteran talent among their ranks. “Our operations managers can support any piece of the company. Right now we’re filling a lot of these positions in our international groups, corporate procurement, sales and service, and the manufacturing side, where they’re focusing on things like lean," explains Amy Fossum, Staffing Manager at Polaris. She goes on to tell Hodon that Polaris hires veterans because they know how to lead, how to plan and conduct training, and they're adventurous.  

The article points out that not only does this career field offer great advancement opportunities and responsibility, but also excellent pay. Hodon cites payscale.com stating that the average pay for operations managers in the U.S. is $80,339, and the top pay potential is well over $100,000. 

In addition to exploring what this career entails, the article also profiles veterans from various companies, including Orion alumnus Harrison Drapo, supervisor at Polaris. Drapo was hired by Polaris through Orion in November 2013. An Army Captain with five years of service, he describes his typical day as "mak[ing] sure the employees are happy, productive and keeping everything on track."  

Dalton Pierce, Director of Operations for Polaris’ Roseau, MN, manufacturing facility, explains that while military experience might help to set a veteran apart from other candidates or get the job, veterans should expect a learning curve. “Veterans are going to be looking at starting out behind their peers from an age group standpoint because they’ve spent the last three to four years defending their country, while their peers spent three to four years learning manufacturing,” Pierce states, “But in my experience, vets quickly outpace the typical college graduate."

National Distinguished Candidate Conference - October 13 & 14 in San Diego, CA

Alumni Update: Jeff Moehling

U.S. Army Captain Jeff Moehling separated from service in June 2000 and began working with Orion International to find a civilian career. That partnership led to a position as a Sales Representative with Eli Lilly. The career match was an excellent one, and, in August 2014, Moehling celebrated his 14-year anniversary with the company.

After three years in his initial position, Moehling was promoted to Senior Sales Representative as a result of above average sales results and consistent leadership within his district. In May 2004, he was promoted to an associate role in Eli Lilly’s corporate office in Indianapolis, Indiana, and spent two years there as a Sales Training Associate. Following that, he was again promoted to a District Sales Manager position in Tyler, Texas, where he supervised ten sales representatives all over East Texas.

Then, in August 2009, Moehling made the decision to return to Austin and an Executive Sales Representative role in order to spend more time with his family and explore other outside interests. Moehling explains that doing so paid off, “I am now a father of two, and a three-time Ironman triathlon finisher!”

Moehling has some sage advice for veterans making the transition to a civilian career: "The best advice I can give to our transitioning military is to get any assistance you can, be patient, and have a lot of confidence in the value you can provide to future employers as a veteran. Whether you were enlisted or an officer, the experiences and training you have received will prove extremely valuable to civilian companies. The best soldiers are able to lead and motivate those around them, and I have yet to come across an executive that isn't looking for the future leaders of his/her company."

Medtronic Spine and Biologics has created a development program to train and educate future sales professionals. The primary objective of the program is to take talented professionals with minimal sales experience and, through an intensive immersion program, prepare them to become successful Sales Representatives.  This program will provide you the necessary tools and training to succeed as a highly specialized sales person within the Medical Device Industry.

Program Overview

  • This sales development program is approximately 12-18 months in duration and is broken down into different phases of growth and development.

  • In the first Phase, you will learn foundational components of Spinal and Biologics Sales (including anatomy, pathology, procedures, compliance, and sales process), gain exposure to important business functions (including Marketing, Development, Customer Service, Operations, and Education), assist with sales and surgeon training labs, and provide other sales support.

  • In the second Phase, application of acquired learning will be emphasized in the field. You will spend 3-4 days a week in the field working alongside district sales teams and designated field mentors - Spine Sales Representative - interacting with customers, while also learning and performing the day-to-day activities of the Spine Representative.

  • At the end of the program and based on personal aptitude, procedural certification, proven proficiency, and territory availability, you will be given the opportunity to interview for a position in an open territory and promoted to a Spine Representative.

Salary and Benefits

  • As a Sales Education Representative, you will earn a base salary of $70,000.  You will also be eligible to participate in the corporate performance-based Medtronic Incentive Plan with a target bonus opportunity of 5% of your annual eligible earnings.  Beginning in month ten, you will be eligible to participate in a performance-based incentive plan with a quarterly bonus opportunity of $5,000 and you will remain eligible for the corporate performance-based Medtronic Incentive Program with a target bonus opportunity of 5% of your eligible earnings.  

Position Requirements

  • Top transitioning or recently transitioned Junior Military Officer
  • Bachelors degree in technical, science, or engineering field
  • Passion for entering the highly competitive industry of Medical Device Sales
  • Technical aptitude is important because you will be learning very complex procedures and pieces of equipment
  • Top notch communication skills and be able to communicate and instruct effectively 
  • Strong work ethic and organization and prioritization skills
  • Willingness to travel. In Phase I of the training program you will travel 50%, and in Phase II you will travel 90%. You will not be required to relocate throughout the training program, but will likely need to relocate when you get your first territory after completing the program. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance policy.

Locations: You can live in your current home during training, but will spend a significant amount of time in Memphis, TN. You must be somewhat geographically flexible (open to at least a 4-5 state region) when you exit the program.
