The Veteran Low to High Challenge hike has started! A group of Orion employees, Veterans, Partners, and Corporate Sponsors began the trek on October 10th and will hike through October 18th, starting in Death Valley (282 feet below sea level) to the summit of Mount Whitney (14,505 feet elevation). It will cover 120+ miles with a 14,787 elevation change. Good luck to everyone participating in the hike!

Success at the Virginia Beach and Raleigh Office 5K Races

Last month, the Virginia Beach and Raleigh offices held the Help Our Heroes 5K and Patriot Challenge 5K for the Veteran Low to High Challenge! The Virginia Beach office raised a total of $6,485 for our partner Veteran organizations, with 117 runners participating in the event. The Raleigh office raised $16,303 (with a goal of $10,000!). 268 runners attended the event.

Highlights from the Raleigh office race include members of Rolling Thunder that led runners along the road for a portion of the course, the post-race raffle drawing with over $1,000 in prizes, and the USVC ArchAngels Rappel Team as they rappelled from the Koka Booth Amphitheatre light towers!

The Orion team would like to thank everyone who made both of these events a success, especially to the sponsors of the Virginia Beach race and the Raleigh race.

It is our goal to raise $100K+ for our partner Veteran Organizations through the Veteran Low to High Challenge and through 5K Run / Walk Races in each of the cities in which we have an Orion office - Austin, TX; Cincinnati, OH; Raleigh, NC; Virginia Beach, VA; and San Diego, CA.

All Things Career Podcast Provides Solid Advice for Transitioning Veterans

All Things Career founder, Kevin Kermes, recently hosted a Google Hangout called “The Job Search for Veterans in Transition” featuring Orion International Recruiting Manager, Todd Phillips. Kermes, also the founder of Career Attraction and Every Veteran Hired, hosts top career podcasts on All Things Career that deliver actionable career advice. Phillips is a former active duty Army Field Artillery Officer, Ranger school graduate, and Afghanistan combat veteran who puts his experience to work for Orion International, where he helps veterans transition into civilian careers.

The 42-minute podcast with Phillips covered topics including mistakes veterans make when considering career choices, how to narrow down career choices, the importance of networking, referrals, and relationships, as well as career trends. In his August 2014 GI Jobs article, Industry Intel: Surprising Retail Careers, Marty Levine interviews Ellen Davis, senior vice president of the National Retail Federation (NRF), who describes a robust career field. Davis explains: “Retail is a fantastic career opportunity. First of all, it’s big – there are a ton of opportunities. You can work in retail in your hometown. You can travel around the world with retail. The biggest tip I would give a veteran is that this is an industry that really offers career opportunities.” That includes careers in IT and cyber security, logistics, and operations.

Kimberly Fry, senior manager for talent acquisition at Whirlpool, tells Levine, “We’ve found veterans to be outstanding talent. Our biggest challenge is finding roles that are big enough for them – which is a great problem to have. What I found is that the background of the military is so diverse that I can place the veterans anywhere in our organization and we’ll be confident in their performance – from hourly to the top and everywhere in between.”

Due to the diversity of available positions in Retail, Davis points out that veterans are going to find tremendous opportunity in areas where they already have experience in the military, be it logistics, security, management, or even IT. “Forty-four percent of retail jobs have nothing to with being in a sales role,” she says. Salaries can vary greatly by position but, according to Davis, Retail is one of the few “meritocracies” left, with many people in retail bring home $100,000+.

Ultimately, Levine illustrates that Retail is more than just being a cashier and that those who are cashiers have a shot at working their way up the chain into management. He also points out that the breadth of experience veterans have makes them a great fit for this huge, diverse industry.

National Distinguished Candidate Conference - October 27 & 28 in Chicago, IL

Program Overview

  • This sales development program is approximately 12-18 months in duration and is broken down into different phases of growth and development.

  • In the first Phase, you will learn foundational components of Spinal and Biologics Sales (including anatomy, pathology, procedures, compliance, and sales process), gain exposure to important business functions (including Marketing, Development, Customer Service, Operations, and Education), assist with sales and surgeon training labs, and provide other sales support.

  • In the second Phase, application of acquired learning will be emphasized in the field. You will spend 3-4 days a week in the field working alongside district sales teams and designated field mentors - Spine Sales Representative - interacting with customers, while also learning and performing the day-to-day activities of the Spine Representative.

  • At the end of the program and based on personal aptitude, procedural certification, proven proficiency, and territory availability, you will be given the opportunity to interview for a position in an open territory and promoted to a Spine Representative.

Salary and Benefits

  • As a Sales Education Representative, you will earn a base salary of $70,000.  You will also be eligible to participate in the corporate performance-based Medtronic Incentive Plan with a target bonus opportunity of 5% of your annual eligible earnings.  Beginning in month ten, you will be eligible to participate in a performance-based incentive plan with a quarterly bonus opportunity of $5,000 and you will remain eligible for the corporate performance-based Medtronic Incentive Program with a target bonus opportunity of 5% of your eligible earnings.  

Position Requirements

  • Top transitioning or recently transitioned Junior Military Officer
  • Bachelors degree in technical, science, or engineering field
  • Passion for entering the highly competitive industry of Medical Device Sales
  • Technical aptitude is important because you will be learning very complex procedures and pieces of equipment
  • Top notch communication skills and be able to communicate and instruct effectively 
  • Strong work ethic and organization and prioritization skills
  • Willingness to travel. In Phase I of the training program you will travel 50%, and in Phase II you will travel 90%. You will not be required to relocate throughout the training program, but will likely need to relocate when you get your first territory after completing the program. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance policy.

Locations: You can live in your current home during training, but will spend a significant amount of time in Memphis, TN. You must be somewhat geographically flexible (open to at least a 4-5 state region) when you exit the program.

At Michelin, an Industrial engineering job is one of our top entry level jobs for former military officers. The Industrial Engineer regularly studies, analyzes, presents and implements agreed upon recommendations. Project work includes analysis in machine capacity, material flow, expansion needs, manpower planning, and productivity and efficiency improvements. The Industrial Engineer also develops and utilizes classical Industrial Engineering techniques, administrative responsibilities, and project facilitation after an in-depth 6 month training program.

Michelin's Leadership Development Rotation Program (LDRP) is designed specifically for high-potential, high-performing Master's degree candidates who want to accelerate their development. In the second year, you should be making $90K plus.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a science or technical field. Technical experience from the military with a "soft" degree will be acceptable in some instances.
