Veterans Help to Advance the Future with SpaceX

Ever since Orion International and SpaceX began their recruiting partnership back in 2011, one thing has been clear: military veterans are equipped with the top-notch leadership and state-of-the-art technological skills needed to drive as innovative a company as SpaceX. Founded in 2002, SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. Believing that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not, their ultimate goal is to enable human life on Mars.

Over the past four years, Orion has matched nearly 200 veterans with exciting careers at SpaceX in positions ranging from Engineers to Technicians. These veterans have served in all branches of the military in varying MOCs, and their expertise has helped SpaceX to continue to break new ground with their commercial resupply services missions to the International Space Station for NASA. Military Technicians with experience in Avionics, Aircraft Electricians, Aviation Mechanics, Hull Technicians, Composites, Welders, CNC Machinists, as well as Navy Nuclear Technicians are a great fit the SpaceX mission, as are Military Officers with Engineering backgrounds.

SpaceX is not only an innovative company, but also an outstanding employer. Stephen Durant, a Lead Structures Technician at SpaceX and former Air Force Structural Maintenance Technician, has found that SpaceX not only offers a fantastic benefits program with lots of overtime, but they also “keep you developing and learning new skills and practices. The opportunity to progress in your career is clearly available with new positions opening all the time.”

Melina Velasquez, a SpaceX Technician and former Navy Aviation Electrician's Mate, explains, “We veterans like structure, stability and excitement! Of all the places I've worked since ending my military career (five to be exact), SpaceX is the first one to fulfill all my requirements and then some. If you want to be a part of history in the making and do something that matters and offers many perks all while being excited to get up in the morning to go to work, then I recommend SpaceX."

In fact, one theme that Orion has consistently seen in feedback from the veterans we helped find careers at SpaceX, is a sense of excitement of being part of a larger mission. Melina goes on to describe her experience at SpaceX, “I feel like 'Charlie in the Chocolate Factory' every time I walk through the doors at SpaceX. It's a dream job I didn't even know I could get. Throughout my military career, I've been able to see and do some neat things, like an F/A 18 Super Hornet landing on a moving ship mere feet from where I'm standing. And this continues to be the case at SpaceX, as I get to be a part of one of the fastest growing and history making companies in the world!”

The most rewarding part of the job for Anthony Bruno, also a Technician at SpaceX and former Navy Aviation Electrician's Technician, is actually seeing the things he worked on change an industry as a whole. “It is extremely rewarding with a lot of cool moments thrown in, like watching space station dockings and launches from mission control.  SpaceX is accomplishing things not seen in the industry, and it's cool to be a part of it. I would definitely recommend vets to work here!" says Anthony.

The partnership between Orion and SpaceX continues with interviews being held frequently for Technical and Engineering positions. Specifically, veterans can apply here to interview February 28th in Los Angeles for positions such as:

  • Composites Technician
  • Structures Technician
  • Avionics Harness Technician
  • NDT Technician
  • Propulsion Technician
  • Structures Technician
  • Integration & Test Engineer
  • Production Control Scheduler
  • Supplier Quality Engineer
  • Manufacturing Engineer
  • Purchasing Manager

SpaceX offers exciting, fulfilling career opportunities that not only allow veterans to put their skills to work but also be a part of history. Veterans like Stephen, Melina, and Anthony are just a few of the many veterans at SpaceX helping the company to complete its mission.  Interested in a career with a history-making space transport company? How to Format a Resume

As a service member, it can be challenging to create a resume in an easy-to-read format that best highlights your skill set. Often, civilian employers are most comfortable with two formats, either a chronological resume, or a skills based/combination resume. For the vast majority of transitioning veterans, a chronological resume is recommended. Regardless of the format you select, your resume should be professional and orderly in appearance.

Chronological Resume

You should typically use a chronological resume if you have less than 15 years total professional experience and your professional timeline is relatively easy to follow.

This format lists your professional experience in reverse chronological order, so a potential interviewer, military or non-military, can easily follow your professional timeline and very quickly get a good overall understanding of what you are qualified to do.

Keep the following in mind when creating a chronological resume:

  • You must effectively differentiate between your duties and responsibilities, and your achievements. Remember that there are thousands of people who have held a job similar to yours in terms of responsibility, but your achievements are what will set you apart. Be specific and quantify wherever possible.
  • Your duties and responsibilities should be listed directly under your job title and concisely describe your overall responsibilities in two to three lines.
  • Below your responsibilities paragraph, you should list 2-4 achievements for each job held.
  • GPA should only be listed if it is above 3.0.

Skills Based/Combination Resume

You should typically use a skills based/combination resume if you have more than 15 years professional experience, a very diverse professional background, and/or are trying to tailor your resume for a specific industry or position.

This format starts with a professional summary and highlights several key professional attributes that you want to emphasize. The skill based/combination format allows a potential interviewer to view your background in an easy to read format that emphasizes the skill sets you are trying to convey.

Keep the following in mind when creating a skills based/combination resume:

  • Ensure your summary paragraph accurately outlines your professional experience.
  • Carefully select the skills listed and the achievements that support each. The first skill set listed should be your strongest and the one you most want to emphasize.
  • Your achievements supporting each skill set should be specific, concise and quantifiable where possible.
  • The Employment Chronology section should not contain gaps in your timeline.

According to your Peers

“I will never forget my recruiter, Tony Hoffman. He has truly changed my life for the better. He was always so enthusiastic and not once showed any sign of negativity. I haven't met very many people who are so brilliant in their job.

In all, Orion International not only met my expectations, but they changed my life. It was a wonderful experience working with them, and I encourage anyone searching for a career after the military to seek direction through Orion International.” – Daniel Chavez, Field Service Technician, Siemens Energy

“The Orion team ensured that I was placed with the right company and guided me throughout the entire process. I placed my resume online and directly with companies in my area and hardly ever received any serious offers. Orion gave me the opportunity to actually get in front of hiring managers and show what skills and talent I could bring to the company. Orion even stayed with me even after I started my new job!” – Robert Tackett, Installation Representative, Varian Medical Systems

“I only attended one Hiring Conference, and was hired from that event. Curtis Hagens did a great job of sharing information about the company, reviewing interview fundamentals, and then doing mock interviews. I cannot stress enough how helpful the mock interviews were for someone like myself who had not interviewed in nearly 10 years. The mock interviews gave me a level of confidence that I feel was a deciding factor in my successful interview leading to a job offer. Thank you, Curtis!” – Justin Rose, Field Service Specialist II, Honeywell
