10 Steps to Acing a Phone Interview

For many veterans interviewing for careers in the civilian sector, the transition involves phone interviews in addition to face-to-face. This type of interview presents special challenges in that you cannot read body language and it can be more difficult to make a connection with your interviewer(s). Often, phone interviews are used for initial screening of candidates, but in a very global job market, they are also increasingly being used to save time and money by interviewing candidates where they are as opposed to flying them out for a first interview. Below are some tips on how to prepare for and ace your phone interview:

  1. Make sure you will be using a high-quality phone! The last thing you need is for the call to drop or for the interviewer to hear every other word. Often times, a land line may be the best bet, due to its lack of reception issues.
  2. Turn off call-waiting. Hearing that beep in the middle of a sentence can throw you off-track and sounds like a sudden silence to those on the other end.
  3. Schedule the call for a time when you can be alone in the quiet. While this one is obvious, it bears mentioning. If you are not the one to schedule the call, try to find someone who can help you establish a quiet environment while you’re on the call.
  4. Dress like you would for a face-to-face interview. Even though your interviewer(s) won’t see you, you’ll portray confidence if you’ve dressed for the part. Interviewing in pajamas may sound comfortable but that laid-back apparel could translate into a blasé attitude.
  5. Have a glass of water. This will help if you get nervous and your mouth dries up or you keep clearing your throat.
  6. Create a crib sheet. The benefit of a phone interview is that the interviewer(s) can’t see your notes, so create a list of questions and insights. Just be careful not to sound as if you’re reading it.
  7. Have your resume in front of you. This will help you easily refer to your specific skills and direct your interviewers to certain information.
  8. Smile! It will translate in your voice.
  9. Ask for the job. Just as you would in a face-to-face interview, close the interview by reaffirming your interest in the job and asking what the next steps are.
  10. Say thank you! Once you’ve confirmed next steps, thank the interviewers for their time and consideration, both verbally and then in writing.

A Guide to Civilian Benefits: An Important Part of any Job Offer

Transitioning from the military to a civilian employer involves changes in almost every aspect of your career. This is particularly true when it comes to the benefits package you can expect to receive. In addition to salary, a company’s benefit package is a key component to an overall job package, and the more information you have when considering an offer, the better decision you can make.

Below is an overview on typical benefits packages in the types of companies in which we usually place our candidates. This information is not all-inclusive, but it is intended to highlight the most common benefit options provided by employers today.

Vacation, Holidays and Time Off

On average, you can expect to accrue vacation and sick days on a per month basis, with most companies offering 7-14 days vacation a year.

In addition to vacation days, most companies also observe certain standard national holidays throughout the year, to include the following:

  • New Years Day
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving
  • Christmas Day

Health Insurance Plans

Health Insurance is a very important component of a company’s benefit package. There are a number of different types of health insurance plans available in Corporate America, and it can be somewhat confusing for transitioning military officers accustomed to the military’s TRICARE system.

When you are evaluating a company’s health insurance plan, there are three critical components that you should understand: the type of plan (PPO or HMO), premiums, and co-pays. The overall cost of different healthcare plans can vary widely, and the plan that is best for you will depend on your individual situation and a careful cost/benefit analysis.

In addition to Health Insurance, your employer will probably offer an additional plan for Dental and/or Vision coverage that you may elect to purchase for yourself and/or your dependents. Most companies offer two types of relatively inexpensive disability insurance, Short Term Disability Insurance and Long Term Disability Insurance, as well.

Other Civilian Benefits – Retirement, Relocation, Bonuses and More

401(k) Plans

A 401(k) is the most common type of retirement savings program offered by companies, and has all but replaced the traditional pension plan. A 401(k) is an employer-sponsored retirement plan that allows a worker to save for retirement while deferring income tax on the saved money and earnings until withdrawal. The employee elects to have a portion of his or her wages paid directly, or "deferred", into his or her 401(k) account. There are maximum contribution limits. For 2014, the maximum contribution to a 401(k) is limited to $17,500 for individuals under the age of 50. Some companies will match a percentage of your contributions to your 401(k) program.

Relocation Assistance

Companies typically offer relocation assistance on a case-by-case basis. If a company offers a relocation package, it will come in the form of either a relocation bonus or they will take care of moving your household goods, similar to a military PCS move. If you receive a relocation bonus, the amount will vary depending on the company, the position you are hired for, and the physical distance involved in the move. Relocation assistance can significantly add to the overall value of an offer.

Bonuses

Bonuses can significantly increase the value of your overall compensation package. You may a signing or performance bonus depending on how your individual compensation package is structured. Bonuses are typically taxed at a higher rate than your normal wages.

Tuition Reimbursement

Some companies may offer tuition reimbursement for college or graduate school classes. Typically, there is a limited amount of assistance available. Additionally, most companies require that classes taken apply directly to your position or the industry in general.

Company Car or Car Allowance

Most sales positions that involve a significant amount of driving (such as pharmaceutical and medical device companies) provide either a company car or a monthly car allowance as part of your overall compensation package. A company car or allowance can add seven to ten thousand dollars to the overall value of your offer.

Employee Stock Plans

There are three primary stock option plans that companies may offer as part of an overall compensation package: Employee Stock Option Plans, Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs), and Employee Stock Purchase Plans (ESPPs). Each is different and offers unique advantages. All three can add significantly to the overall value of an offer.

Salary: Compensation is $18-$24+/hr, depending on experience, certifications, licenses, education, and location. This is a "salary plus" position, meaning that you will be paid for 40 hours. If you work over 40 hours, it is overtime paid at time and a half. If you work on Saturday, it is at time and a half for the first eight hours and then double time for anything over eight hours. Sunday and holidays are double time.

Benefits: Atlas Copco provides annual performance based and base pay increases. A company vehicle and gas is provided, with an approximate $75 a day per diem for overnight travel. A tool box bonus of $200 is provided every other year, and a safety boot bonus of up to $150 is provided every year.

Position Requirements:

  • Four-plus years of technical experience maintaining and repairing various types of mechanical and electrical equipment
  • Documented classroom and practical application training in mechanical and/or electrical field
  • Demonstrated expertise in the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of a wide variety of industrial equipment to include hydraulics and compressors
  • Validated electrical background, experience with VSD, controllers, and motor controls
  • Should have computer skills sufficient enough to be used for communication, research, work orders and programming various controllers for machines that will be worked on
  • Must be able self-manage and be organized to get jobs completed in a timely fashion
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills
  • Willing to travel out of town to perform work
  • Availability for 24-hour emergency calls
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must have an acceptable credit history/record in order to obtain company credit card
  • Bi-lingual is a plus
  • Technicians are required to provide basic tools (screwdrivers, ratchets, sockets, wrenches, pliers, hammer, flashlight, multi-meter etc.) Specialty tools and replacement tools will be provided.

Maintenance Technician Positions with Honda

Shift: Must be flexible and able to rotate shifts on an on-going basis and work weekends plus overtime as required

Salary: Starting base pay will be $25/hr. + shift differential according to assigned shift + 25% O/T + bonus structure according to production and/or performance. Total 1st Year Annual Salary ~ $60K - $70K+.

Electrical Maintenance Technician Positions with a Worldwide Steel Manufacturer

  • Knowledge of PLCs, AC and DC drives, the National Electric Code, and the ability to use electrical test equipment and computers is desired; Successful candidate may be required to perform maintenance on AC and DC power systems, up to and including 13.8KV
  • Excellent work attendance record, ability to report to work as scheduled, flexibility to work overtime as needed or directed
