Workplace-Friendly Computer Use

It is true, Big Brother is watching. And, yes, your computer can get you fired. In this ever-increasing technological culture, there is confusion over what is and is not work appropriate computer use.

Each company should have a policy or set of rules on computer use. Be sure to ask for a copy of this policy and know it inside and out. For most jobs, there is no way to avoid computer use on the job. So, be sure to keep updated on the rules. Here are some basic guidelines that most corporations employ:

Bloggers Beware: Even if you don’t identify yourself or your company, having strong opinions that don’t reflect well on your employer can get you fired. The bottom line is this; if you wish to blog, keep your opinions non-offensive and try to keep an open mind. If you need to express a strong opinion on a subject, try calling a close, non-work friend to get things off your chest.

No Pictures: Do not share pictures at work, unless they are related to the content of your job. For example, the person in the cubicle next to you wants to share personal pictures, just tell the person that you are busy and will look later. Take time after work hours on your own home computer to look at the pictures. And, absolutely no content which may be offensive to anyone.

Games, Games, Games: If your company prohibits use of games during work hours, do not play them. This may seem obvious, but more than enough people have been terminated for using company property (i.e. your computer) to play Solitaire during their lunch break.

Following these simple guidelines can help to avoid a messy termination. Employers are primarily concerned with legal liability and profit. Basically, if a company can be held legally responsible for an employee’s actions or if those actions prevent the company from making money, this can result in job loss. Keep this in mind at all times and when in doubt, ask your superiors.

Considering a Sales Career after the Military?

Here is your chance to work with other veterans and find employment for those transitioning from service, while working in a team-driven sales environment. Orion is the nation’s largest military recruiting firm, and we are looking to expand our team! We are currently seeking talented individuals with an avid drive for sales to add to our Account Executive ranks.

Account Executives are responsible for discovering and securing job opportunities for our candidates. You will create and maintain relationships with America's leading companies to provide a pipeline of military talent that only Orion can offer. As an Account Executive you grow and manage a portfolio of client accounts through development of your leads list, business development calls, and client visits.

Once a job offer is received, it is the Account Executive who discusses the specific opportunity with the selected candidates, provides interview guidance and preparation for the candidate, and arranges the interview process. Throughout the final phases of the hiring process you will work with both the client and candidate to provide superior customer service and consultation to each.

Orion offers its employees competitive salaries (you will never be placed on 100% commission) and benefits including paid holidays, vacation and sick leave; medical, dental and vision coverage; short- and long-term disability; health savings account (HSA) and 401(k) retirement plan. We believe strongly in promoting from within and as a result, present an annual leadership development program led by the President and CEO to prepare top-tier employees for the potential to earn a leadership role or become a Partner within the company.

If you are current or prior military and motivated, energetic, and interested in sales, a career as an Account Executive may be for you! Please contact Mike Starich today to apply.

JOB SEEKER SUCCESS STORY

George Benjamin
Quality Manager, Honeywell Aerospace

As a CWO5 in the Navy, my last title was Avionics Production Officer in the Fleet Readiness Center Northwest at Naval Air Station Whidbey

Island in Oak Harbor, Washington. My official discharge date wasMarch 31, but I started terminal leave on January 5. I had been sporadically looking for jobs since November. I started seriously job-hunting about the middle of January and discovered Orion on the Internet.

I attended a conference where I listened to briefs about the companies attending and the positions available. I also attended a hiring conference put on by another recruiting firm and found that Orion goes more in depth with the company briefs, which I believe is important to candidates. Initially, after reviewing the list of companies that were attending the conference, I was only interested in two positions. But after listening to the company briefs, I found eight positions I wanted to interview for and was able to schedule for six on Monday.

Of the six companies I interviewed with, five were quite interested in me. I interviewed with three Honeywell representatives. By the end of the day, I was asked to come on-site for a second interview on Tuesday and tour their facility. I first interviewed with the Site Manager and then with their HR specialist, along with their "Operations Excellence" leader. On Wednesday, I officially applied for the position on Honeywell's website and was offered the position on Thursday. On Friday, I accepted the job!
